Local guides from Puerto Rico take small groups into El Yunque on the east of the island. Days are spent on muddy forest trails to river pools, a natural rock slide, and swimming holes, with time to swim and to hear about the plants, wildlife, and history of the rainforest. The walking is physical and on uneven ground, so a decent level of fitness is needed.
Depending on the outing, guests either meet in Fajardo and follow the guide in their own vehicle, or meet in San Juan for a lift to the forest. The longer day includes a stop at a family-run restaurant afterwards; food is paid for on the day. The aim is a real day in the forest rather than a crowded viewpoint circuit.
