Snorkelling in the UK provides a chance to see shy marine residents close-up, even if you’ve only snorkelled on holiday. With guidance from SSI Snorkel Instructors, you’ll explore shore sites along the South Coast, learn to identify species, and gain confidence in the water. Tours are suitable for families, beginners, and anyone looking to experience marine life in a safe, supervised setting.
Your guided snorkel tour begins with a safety briefing and introduction to the equipment. Instructors ensure you are comfortable in the water, practise buddy techniques, and demonstrate entry and exit procedures. The session starts in shallows to build confidence before moving further to explore marine habitats.
Once in the water, you will be guided to look for marine residents like blennies, gobies, prawns, crabs, pipefish, anemones, sponges, wrasse, bream, and bass. Instructors provide tips for spotting camouflaged or muted-coloured species, helping you understand behaviour, habitat, and interactions between organisms.
Tours are tailored to participants’ abilities and interests, allowing for time to photograph, observe, and enjoy the environment. Each session is unique depending on location, tide, and seasonal conditions. Optional private tours or excursions are available to explore further along the UK coastline.
Tours take place at multiple South Coast locations including Weymouth, Kimmeridge, Bognor Regis, Kingsway, and Selsey. Each site offers accessible entry points, shallow waters for skill-building, and diverse marine habitats.
The South Coast features tidal pools, rocky outcrops, and sandy seabeds that support a variety of fish, crustaceans, and plant life. Locations are chosen for safety, visibility, and biodiversity, allowing participants to see a wide range of species and learn about UK marine ecosystems first-hand.
Participants should be comfortable in the water and able to swim. Children must be able to swim at least 25 metres unaided, and those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Suitable swimwear, a towel, and optional waterproof cameras are recommended. Wet suits are provided, but you may use personal equipment if preferred. A positive attitude and curiosity will help you get the most from the experience.
Instructors have extensive experience and a deep understanding of local marine life, delivering personalised guidance to ensure everyone feels confident and safe in the water. Small group sizes allow focused attention and adaptable instruction, making learning engaging and enjoyable.
All tours support ongoing marine education and conservation initiatives along the South Coast. Instructors are actively involved in citizen science, surveys, and monitoring local habitats, giving participants insight into conservation efforts while experiencing the marine environment responsibly.
Anyone with basic swimming ability can join. The tour is suitable for beginners, children, and adults. Instructors adapt exercises to each participant’s skill level, ensuring safety and confidence.
Small group sizes allow personal attention. The instructor can provide guidance on equipment handling, water safety, and species identification to ensure everyone feels prepared and supported throughout the session.
No experience is required. The tour begins with a clear explanation of equipment, including fitting masks, snorkels, fins, and wet suits, followed by entry techniques and safety guidance.
Progression is gradual: participants practise skills in shallow water before moving into deeper areas. By the end, even complete beginners are confident using buddy systems, spotting marine life, and navigating safely in coastal waters.
You may encounter blennies, gobies, wrasse, bream, bass, crabs, prawns, anemones, sponges, and pipefish. Seasonal variations and tides affect which species are visible.
Instructors highlight camouflage, feeding behaviour, and habitat preferences, teaching participants to observe without disturbing the ecosystem. Learning how marine species interact enhances understanding and enjoyment of the environment.
Children must be at least six and able to swim 25 metres unaided, with those under 14 accompanied by an adult. All exercises are supervised closely to maintain safety.
Safety briefings, buddy systems, and shallow water practise ensure children can develop confidence gradually. Instructors also provide advice on pacing, rest breaks, and equipment use to match each child’s abilities.
Wet suits are provided to maintain warmth. Layered swimwear underneath can help if needed, and instructors monitor participants for signs of discomfort.
Breaks are scheduled as required, with advice on stretching, rehydrating, and timing sessions around tides and sun exposure. Comfort is prioritised so participants can focus on learning and enjoying the marine environment.
Yes, participants are welcome to use their own mask, snorkel, or fins. All other required equipment is supplied.
Instructors check the fit and condition of personal equipment to ensure it provides safety and efficiency. They also advise on care and maintenance for long-term use.
Tours last approximately 2–3 hours, depending on group size, tide, and weather. This includes briefing, skill practise, and guided exploration.
Instructors adjust pacing and locations based on participant comfort and marine conditions, ensuring the tour is safe, informative, and enjoyable for everyone.
