A forest trail above Cole Bay takes you up to 341 metres on Sentry Hill, the high point on the Dutch side. You earn a picnic at the top with the island spread out below, then walk the same path back down.
The path is shady and rooted, with a steady pull uphill from ground level through the trees above Cole Bay. Your guide keeps the group together and talks as you go, with short pauses on the steeper pitches. It is a proper hill walk rather than a scramble, so you need shoes that can grip.
At 341 metres the trees drop away and you can see right across Sint Maarten. That is where you stop for photos and the picnic, then take the same forest path down at a pace that is kind on knees. The whole outing is about three and a half hours, and you finish back in Philipsburg.
Sentry Hill sits in the green hills above Cole Bay, a short way from Philipsburg on the Dutch side. You start at ground level and finish at 341 metres, so the views only really open once you leave the trees. On a clear day both sides of the island are in front of you.
Front Street is a short walk from the cruise port and Great Bay, so getting to the start is easy if you are coming off a ship or staying in town. The trail itself is a few minutes inland once you leave the shop.
You need to be happy walking uphill for a few hours on uneven, rooted ground. Children from five can join if an adult stays with them and they can keep up. This is a real hill walk, not a short stroll to a lookout.
Wear closed shoes with grip and bring water and sun protection. Tell your guide if anyone wants a slower pace or has knees that dislike coming down. A small day pack keeps your hands free on the rooted bits.
This is a local team, not a coach-window outing. Guides who know the island take you to the quieter trails and viewpoints most visitors miss, from a shop a short walk from the cruise port on Front Street.
Hill walks and coastal scooter days run from the same place, with one aim: a fun, safe day that feels like the real island. Trips are built around enjoyment, so there is still time to ask what you are looking at.
Start on Front Street in Philipsburg, where your guide talks through the pace and what the trail feels like underfoot. Put on shoes with grip before you leave town for the Cole Bay hills.
The path rises through shaded woodland on roots and packed earth, climbing from ground level toward the 341 metre summit. The group stays together, and your guide points out plants and the shape of the island as the grade changes.
At the top of Sentry Hill the ground opens and you can see right across the island. That is the picnic stop, with time for photos and a proper sit-down before you walk back down.
The same forest trail takes you down at a steady pace so knees and younger walkers stay comfortable. You finish near Front Street, legs worked and the summit picnic behind you.
Meet on Front Street in Philipsburg, a short walk from the cruise port and Great Bay. Your guide briefs you here before you head to the Cole Bay trail.
Wear closed shoes with grip and bring water. If you are coming from a ship, allow time to walk from the port to Front Street before your start time.
Plan for about three and a half hours from Front Street to the summit picnic and back down. That includes the briefing, a steady climb and a pause at 341 metres.
Fitter groups may move a little faster, and families with younger children may take the full window. We'll set the pace so the group stays together.
Yes, if you are happy walking uphill on uneven ground for a few hours. You don't need technical climbing skills. The path is an established trail, not off-path scrambling.
If you rarely walk hills, say so at the briefing and we'll build in extra pauses. Closed shoes with grip matter more than speed.
Children from five can join when an adult stays with them for the whole walk. The trail includes roots, a steady grade and a descent that can feel long for small legs.
If you are unsure whether a child will enjoy the climb, ask us before you book and tell us how far they usually walk on holiday.
We meet on Front Street in Philipsburg. The shop is a short walk from the cruise port and Great Bay, so ship passengers can usually reach us on foot.
We'll brief you there, then head together to the trail above Cole Bay. Hotel pickup is not included on this hike.
Yes. Once we reach the 341 metre summit there is time for photos and a picnic before we walk back down. That pause is part of the hike, not an optional extra.
Bring extra water and any snacks you know you will want on the climb. Tell us about allergies when you book so we can plan the picnic.
We grade this one moderate. You gain 341 metres on a forest path with roots and some steeper pitches, then you come down the same way.
It is a genuine hill walk, not a short lookout stroll. If you can manage a few hours on your feet and a steady uphill, you will be in the right range.
Closed shoes with grip are essential. Light, breathable clothing, a hat and sun cream work well on the open summit, and a light layer helps if a shower passes through.
Leave flip-flops at the shop. A small day pack keeps your hands free on the rooted sections.
Light rain can still allow a safe walk when the path is not too slick. Heavy rain or poor underfoot conditions can make the roots and descent a bad idea.
If we need to move your hike, we'll contact you with options. Wear a light rain layer in the wetter months so a passing shower does not end the day.
Yes, a well-behaved dog can join if that suits your group. Keep them close on the trail and tell us when you book so we can plan the picnic and the pace.
Bring water for your dog as well as yourself. The summit is open and can be hot, and the descent is the same rooted path you climbed.
No. Plenty of guests come from a cruise ship for the day and walk from the port to Front Street. Just allow enough time to reach the shop before your start time.
If you are staying in Philipsburg or nearby, we use the same meeting point. Transport from hotels is not included unless you arrange it separately.

About the centre
Philipsburg
You'll find us on Front Street in Philipsburg, a short walk from the cruise port on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten. Local guides lead hikes on Sentry Hill and St Peters Hill, and a shop-front fleet of scooters is ready if you would rather explore the island at your own pace.
We'll brief you at the shop before you set off, whether you join a guided scooter tour or hire a scooter for the day. Trails stay on established routes above town, and the rental desk is set up for cruise-day timings as well as longer stays. Tell us how you want to spend the day and we'll help you choose the hike or ride that fits.
