Sharing the waves with others makes learning to surf both enjoyable and motivating. Group surf lessons at Caleta de Famara bring together people of similar abilities, creating a welcoming environment where you can build confidence, improve your technique, and enjoy one of Lanzarote's most popular surfing beaches.
Before entering the water, you'll be introduced to your instructor, fitted with the appropriate surfboard and wetsuit, and guided through a short equipment check. A theory session follows, covering essential safety information, how to read the conditions, and the techniques that will be practised during the lesson. The coaching is adapted to the overall level of the group, ensuring everyone learns at a comfortable pace.
Practical instruction begins on the sand, where you'll practise movements such as paddling, popping up, and correct body positioning before taking everything into the sea. Once in the water, your instructor provides regular feedback, helping you refine your technique while giving everyone plenty of opportunities to catch waves and develop confidence in real conditions.
Choosing the full-day option gives you additional time on the beach, including a break between sessions to relax, chat with the group, and discuss your progress before heading back into the water. By the end of your lesson you'll have gained practical surfing experience, improved your understanding of the ocean, and shared a memorable day with fellow surfers.
Located on Lanzarote's north-west coast, Caleta de Famara is widely regarded as one of the island's best surfing destinations. Its long sandy beach, open coastline, and reliable waves create excellent conditions for learning while offering plenty of space for multiple groups to enjoy the water comfortably.
Away from the surf, the village has a relaxed atmosphere with cafés, restaurants, and coastal views that make it well worth exploring before or after your lesson. The surrounding scenery adds to the experience, making it an enjoyable place to spend the day even when you're not on your board.
Previous surfing experience isn't necessary, as lessons are suitable for complete beginners through to more experienced surfers. Participants are organised into groups with similar abilities wherever possible, allowing everyone to progress together.
Confidence in the water is recommended, and you should arrive ready for an active session. Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, and drinking water are all useful items to bring with you.
Learning alongside experienced instructors helps you progress faster while keeping every session enjoyable and safe. The focus is always on building confidence through practical coaching, clear demonstrations, and encouraging guidance both on the beach and in the sea.
Mateo leads the experienced team and is passionate about helping every surfer enjoy their time on the water. Whether you're catching your very first wave or refining existing skills, you'll receive friendly support throughout your lesson.
These lessons are suitable for complete beginners as well as surfers who already have some experience. Everyone is placed into groups based on their ability wherever possible, allowing each participant to learn at an appropriate pace without feeling out of their depth.
This creates a supportive atmosphere where you can ask questions, practise alongside people at a similar level, and enjoy learning together while still receiving individual coaching from your instructor throughout the session.
The half-day lesson includes around two hours of surfing, making it ideal if you're trying surfing for the first time or fitting it into a busy holiday schedule. You'll still receive theory, practical coaching, and plenty of time in the water.
Selecting the full-day option extends your time to around four hours and includes a break between sessions. The extra time allows you to practise more, receive additional feedback, and develop your confidence at a more relaxed pace.
Everything you need for the lesson is provided, including a surfboard and wetsuit suitable for your size and experience level. The equipment is selected to help make learning as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
Using quality beginner-friendly equipment makes a noticeable difference, especially if it's your first experience on a surfboard, allowing you to focus on improving rather than worrying about your gear.
Every session starts on the beach with a short introduction to the equipment, ocean conditions, and essential safety information. Your instructor will explain what you'll be learning before demonstrating the key techniques on dry land.
Beginning with theory gives you a better understanding of surfing before entering the sea. Once you're comfortable with the basics, you'll move into the water to put everything into practice with guidance throughout.
Although the lessons are taught in groups, instructors spend time working with each participant throughout the session. They observe your technique, offer practical advice, and help you make small adjustments that improve your surfing.
This combination of group learning and personal coaching allows everyone to progress while enjoying the social atmosphere that group lessons naturally create.
A reasonable level of fitness is helpful, but you don't need previous sporting experience to enjoy surfing. Lessons are designed to introduce techniques gradually while giving you time to rest between attempts.
Your instructor will adapt the pace to suit the group, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience while building confidence at a comfortable rate.
Bring swimwear to wear beneath your wetsuit, a towel, sunscreen, drinking water, and comfortable clothes for after your lesson. These essentials will help keep you comfortable throughout the day.
If you've booked the full-day lesson, bringing a light snack for the break is also a good idea, although many visitors choose to eat in the nearby village after finishing.
Absolutely. Taking multiple lessons gives you more time to develop techniques, become familiar with the equipment, and gain confidence in different wave conditions over several days.
Many surfers notice significant improvements after a short series of lessons, making the multi-day options a popular choice for visitors wanting to make real progress during their stay.
