Kigali is the start of this four day trip: an airport welcome, a city night, then the road north to Volcanoes National Park. The main day is a guided walk to a gorilla family in the forest, with lodge stays either side. You finish with a return to Kigali for your onward flight.
After the airport welcome you are helped with paperwork and taken to Heaven Boutique Hotel for dinner and overnight on half board. The second morning is the Kigali Genocide Memorial, with audio in English and other languages, then the drive to Davinci Lodge for a full-board night near the park. There is no forest walking until day three, so the first two days are road, city, and rest.
Park headquarters gathers the group at 07:00. You transfer to the start point for an 08:00 walk to the allocated family. The hike can be 30 minutes or more than four hours each way, over roots, moss, and mud. After the hour with the gorillas you return to the lodge for lunch and a quiet afternoon. Day four is the drive back to Kigali, with an optional Dian Fossey Fund stop if you want it in the airport plan.
High green streets in Kigali make a practical first night after a long flight. The memorial visit gives the city context before you leave the tarmac for the northwest.
Volcanoes National Park sits on the Virunga range, where the forest is steep, wet, and close. Walk length depends on where the family has moved that morning. The ground is not a graded path.
Steep wet forest for up to several hours is the real test. You may scramble over rocks and through undergrowth. The walk is not a technical climb, but it can feel arduous when the family is far from the trailhead. No previous trek experience is required.
The minimum age is 12. Park rules are strict on health and group size; tell the team about fitness or mobility limits before you travel. Younger children are not taken to the gorillas.
A team schooled in tourism and wildlife affairs has spent years shaping East African days around the time you actually have. A known lodge pair keeps this circuit simple: airport, city, park, trek, airport.
Guides who work this briefing ground know the drive times, so you are not guessing the morning start. The itinerary leaves space after the walk rather than rushing back to Kigali the same afternoon.
A representative meets you outside the customs and immigration hall, helps with arrival paperwork, and transfers you to Heaven Boutique Hotel. The rest of the day is quiet after the flight: check in, dinner, and an overnight on a half-board plan in a double room. There is no park activity on this first evening, which keeps the start gentle after a long journey. Keep your passport handy for the next morning's city visit.
After breakfast you visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a necessary pause in the city before you leave for the northwest. Audio guides are available in English and other languages. You then transfer to Volcanoes National Park and check in at Davinci Lodge for a full-board night in a double room. The drive is the main work of the afternoon; save your legs for the trek tomorrow.
An early breakfast, then the park headquarters briefing at 07:00 and a transfer to your start point for an 08:00 walk. You are allocated a gorilla family and follow a ranger team through the forest; the hike can be 30 minutes or more than four hours each way. After the hour with the family you return to the lodge for lunch and a still afternoon. Meals today are full board.
Breakfast, then an optional visit to the Dian Fossey Fund centre or a later checkout with lunch at the lodge. You drive back to Kigali and, if time allows, stop for last shopping before the transfer to Kigali International Airport. Build a wide buffer before an international departure; the morning choice and the road can both run long.
A driver meets you outside the customs and immigration hall at Kigali International Airport and helps with arrival paperwork before the transfer to Heaven Boutique Hotel. Have your flight details with the team before you travel so the meet is timed.
The trip ends with a transfer back to Kigali International Airport on day four. Keep a generous buffer before an evening flight; the optional morning stop and city traffic can add time.
The forest time can be 30 minutes or more than four hours, depending on which family you are given and where they have moved. The walk back can take as long again.
There is no way to choose a short day in advance. Pack as if you will be on your feet all morning, with water and layers for rain.
Transfers can be private or shared, depending on the size of your party and what the team has arranged. The trek itself is still a park-allocated group once you leave the headquarters.
Park rules cap how many people can visit one family. Ask the team before you travel if you want the car to yourselves.
Travellers need to be at least 12. The park does not allow younger children on gorilla walks.
If you are travelling with teenagers, say so before you travel so permit names can be checked against passports.
Night one is at Heaven Boutique Hotel in Kigali on a half-board plan. Nights two and three are at Davinci Lodge near Volcanoes National Park, full board, in a double room.
Lodges are comfortable rather than camping. If you need twin beds or a specific room type, tell the team before you travel.
Yes. Day two includes the Kigali Genocide Memorial before you drive to the park. Audio is available in English and other languages.
It is a quiet, heavy morning. There is time afterwards on the road north; you are not rushed from the memorial onto the trek the same day.
The last morning can include an optional stop at the Dian Fossey Fund centre, or you can stay at the lodge and leave later for Kigali.
Ask the team before you travel if you want that stop built into the airport timing.
The ground is steep, wet, and rooted. You may scramble over mossy rocks and push through thick undergrowth. Fitness matters more than hiking experience.
Porters can sometimes be arranged at the park. If you are unsure about the terrain, say so before you travel.
Long sleeves, long trousers, and boots with real grip. The forest is damp and stinging plants are common, so gloves help on the steeper pulls.
Leave bright colours and strong perfume at the lodge. Neutral layers and a waterproof are enough.
Treks still run in light rain; the forest is wet most of the year. The team may change lodge timing if the road north is slow.
If the park closes the activity, the team will be in touch about moving the day. Pack waterproofs as standard.
You are met at Kigali International Airport and transferred to the city hotel. There is no self-drive meeting point on day one.
Send your flight number before you travel. The last day returns you to the same airport.
