Time on the water can easily slip away due to work, family, or life simply getting busy. These adult sailing sessions are designed for those who already know how to sail but want a friendly, low-pressure way to reconnect with it. The focus is on enjoyment, confidence, and remembering why sailing was something you loved in the first place.
The day starts with an informal welcome ashore, giving everyone a chance to meet, chat through sailing backgrounds, and talk about what they would like to get out of the session. Instructors take time to understand confidence levels and tailor the plan accordingly, whether that means revisiting basics or gently pushing skills a little further. There is no rigid structure, allowing the day to flow naturally based on conditions and group ability.
On the water, sailing is practical and relaxed, with coaching woven into real time sailing rather than constant stopping and starting. You’ll spend time improving boat handling, sail control, manoeuvres, and awareness on the water, all while enjoying being back afloat. The pace is steady and supportive, with plenty of encouragement and space to practise without pressure.
Breaks are built into the day to rest, talk through progress, and enjoy the social side of sailing. By the end of the session, most sailors feel more comfortable, more capable, and far more confident about getting back on the water independently or joining further sessions.
Poole Harbour provides an ideal environment for adult refresher sailing, offering sheltered waters that suit confidence building while still presenting real sailing conditions. The size of the harbour allows sessions to adapt easily to wind and tide, keeping time on the water productive and enjoyable.
With a mix of open stretches and calmer areas, sailors can practise skills in a setting that feels manageable rather than overwhelming. Being based within the harbour also means less time travelling and more time sailing.
These sessions are suitable for adults aged 16 and over who have sailed before and are comfortable afloat but feel out of practice. This could include dinghy sailing from years ago, previous courses, or time spent sailing casually in the past.
You do not need recent qualifications or advanced skills. A basic understanding of sailing terms and safety is expected, but confidence can be rebuilt gradually throughout the day.
The centre has decades of experience helping adults rediscover sailing in a way that feels welcoming rather than intimidating. Sessions are designed around real people with busy lives, changing confidence levels, and varied backgrounds on the water, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Instructors focus on encouragement, clear coaching, and creating a relaxed atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable asking questions and taking their time. Small group sizes, flexible sessions, and sheltered sailing conditions mean the day feels enjoyable, social, and genuinely rewarding, making it much easier to fall back in love with sailing again.
These days are designed for adults who have sailed before but feel rusty or out of practice. Many people attending haven’t sailed in years and want a gentle, enjoyable way to rebuild confidence without committing to a full course.
They are not aimed at complete beginners, but you don’t need to be highly skilled. The focus is on getting comfortable again rather than being assessed or pushed beyond your limits.
Participants will refresh basic sailing skills, including boat handling and navigation. The day focuses on rebuilding confidence on the water and enjoying the social aspects of sailing, all while being surrounded by the natural beauty of Poole Harbour.
A detailed kit list will be provided prior to the course. This includes recommendations for clothing and personal items. We have partnered with Decathlon to offer exclusive discounts on additional gear and clothing you may need.
Unfortunately not. Participants should bring their own lunch and snacks.
Absolutely! You can view and book our full range of courses at the bottom of this page. This sailing day does not come with an RYA qualification, but you can view those which do below.
Buoyancy aids and waterproofs are provided. You will, however, need plenty of old clothes – as sailing can be a damp sport! Bring shorts and tee shirts for warmer days and tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirts for colder days. A pair of old trainers or wetsuit shoes is also recommended. We can provide a more detailed kit list upon booking, too.
Our centre is fully equipped with first aid boxes located in the residential accommodation and sailing centre offices. All our main safety boats carry a first aid kit and a radio. All our instructors hold a valid First Aid certificate and attend a health and safety induction when joining the company.
You should have some prior sailing experience, such as having completed a course in the past or having sailed recreationally. Even if it’s been a long time, that’s completely fine.
If you’re unsure whether your experience is suitable, these sessions are often ideal for those who remember the basics but need time and coaching to reconnect with them.
