A collaborative ten-hour pelagic foray into the Celtic Deep covers up to 70 miles of open sea west of Pembrokeshire. You travel on a traditional-style vessel rather than an open RIB, with space for cameras and a small group focused on offshore wildlife and citizen science.
The Celtic Deep sits in the Celtic Sea off Pembrokeshire, where nutrient-rich water up to about 100 metres deep attracts cetaceans and seabirds. Depending on sightings, the crew may chum to draw in sharks and birds, and use a custom hydrophone so you can listen for dolphins echolocating when conditions allow.
Secchi disc readings contribute to a global plankton survey, and you can help log sightings for the Sea Watch Foundation. Wildlife is never guaranteed, but the guiding team combines local knowledge of underwater topography with decades of wildlife guiding experience.
Departures are organised from the St Davids area with boarding details confirmed once your scheduled request is accepted. The day is built around reaching the Celtic Deep and working back toward Pembrokeshire after up to 70 miles offshore.
Our shop contact point is 10 New Street, St Davids SA62 6SN. Early starts mean parking and the walk to the boarding point need a little extra time on summer mornings.
This trip is recommended for adults or older teenagers only, due to the length of the day and exposure offshore. You need plenty of warm clothing, all your own food and drink, and a realistic tolerance for motion at sea.
There is a toilet on board but facilities are basic. Numbers are capped at ten so everyone has room to move for photography and viewing without crowding the decks.
Your skipper and guide bring combined experience from years on these waters, from fishing backgrounds to wildlife guiding as far afield as Antarctica. The route targets pelagic species such as common and bottlenose dolphin, Risso's dolphin, minke whale, sunfish and a wide range of offshore seabirds.
It suits intrepid wildlife enthusiasts, budding scientists and keen photographers who want one long day rather than a series of shorter coastal hops. Private charter is available for groups who want the vessel exclusively.
Plan for about ten hours from departure to return. The day is designed as a single pelagic expedition into the Celtic Deep rather than a loop around the near islands.
Meet time is typically from 7.30am; your confirmation email carries the exact boarding time and harbour details once the crew accepts your request.
Bring a full lunch, snacks and plenty of water for the whole day at sea. There is no galley on board, so everything you eat and drink needs to come with you.
Choose food that is easy to manage on a moving boat and pack rubbish in a bag to keep the deck tidy. Hot drinks are not provided.
Yes. There is a toilet on this traditional vessel, but facilities are basic compared with ashore.
Use harbour toilets before departure when you can, and mention any mobility concerns when you book so we can talk honestly about comfort for a ten-hour day.
The trip is generally recommended for adults or older teenagers only, due to the length of the day. It is ideal for intrepid wildlife enthusiasts, budding scientists or keen photographers.
Minimum age is 14. If you are unsure about seasickness or long offshore days, a shorter Grassholm or island trip is a good way to test how you cope before booking this expedition.
The crew searches for pelagic cetaceans and seabirds in the Celtic Deep, with past sightings including common and bottlenose dolphin, Risso's dolphin, minke whale, sunfish, sharks and a wide range of offshore birds from gannets and shearwaters to storm petrels.
Sightings are never guaranteed, which is part of the excitement of a true offshore day. Depending on conditions, the crew may chum to attract sharks and birds or use the hydrophone to listen for dolphins underwater.
Ten-hour offshore days need a fair forecast and comfortable sea state. If the crew cancels, you will be offered another date or a refund under the Flexible policy at checkout.
You hear as early as forecasts allow. Safety and reasonable comfort for a small group on a traditional vessel drive the decision.
Boarding is in the St Davids area once your scheduled request is accepted. Exact pontoon or harbour instructions are emailed with your confirmation.
Allow extra time for parking and the walk to the boat on busy mornings. The New Street shop is the contact address on file if you need directions on the day.
Choose your date and party size on Adventuro. The crew accepts only when forecast, crewing and vessel availability align for a full pelagic day.
Payment follows the scheduled-request checkout for this listing. Adventuro chat is useful if you need to chase a pending request before you travel.
Yes. Private charter pricing covers the whole vessel for the expedition, subject to the same maximum of ten passengers.
Charter suits photography clubs or research-minded groups who want flexibility to linger when animals appear. Mention charter intent when you first request a date.
The minimum age for this trip is 14, and it is aimed at adults or older teenagers because of the ten-hour offshore day.
Younger family members are better suited to Ramsey, Skomer or Grassholm trips, which have shorter days and lower age guidance on our other sailings.

About the centre
St Davids
You'll join small-group wildlife boat trips along the Pembrokeshire coast, from Ramsey Sound and Skomer to Grassholm and the Celtic Deep. Experienced skippers and crew know where puffins, shearwaters, seals, and dolphins are likely to show, and they keep the day unhurried so you can watch, photograph, and ask questions on deck.
Trips run from St Davids and the surrounding harbours, with routes chosen for the season and the weather. Whether you want a short island run, a sunset shearwater sail, or a full-day offshore expedition, the team shares local knowledge and a genuine enthusiasm for the marine life and geology of west Wales.
