Ice fishing starts with an easy snowmobile cruise to a winter hole, where a local guide shows the method and you wait in the quiet. Catch is never promised, and the campfire snack still happens if the fish stay down, so the outing works as a ride and a taught stop either way.
Thermal kit and a slow ride out take you to a fishing spot the guide knows, after a briefing on the machines at the house. There is a second briefing at the hole on the line, the sit, and how to watch without fussing the ice. You take turns and spend time looking at the forest between bites, because ice fishing is as much a wait as a result.
Hot drinks and a snack are part of the stop whether the hole has been kind or not. If something comes up it can be cooked at the fire so you taste it while it is still the story of the morning. The return ride brings you back to town along a similar line of forest and frozen water, then you drop the outer kit at the house.
Quiet ice and winter forest sit close to Rovaniemi once you leave the last streets. The fishing hole is chosen for access by snowmobile and for a bit of hush, not for a crowd of rods standing shoulder to shoulder.
You are not on a busy harbour ice. The point is the quiet and the small ritual of the hole, with the fire and the drinks there to make the wait honest rather than grim. The ride out and back is part of how you reach that hush, not a long expedition in its own right.
No snowmobile or ice-fishing experience is required. You should be happy sitting still in the cold and following the guide around an opening in the ice, because the wait at the hole is colder than the ride and needs patience more than technique.
Children can often travel in a sled on the ride out and watch or try the line with an adult. Share ages beforehand so the team can plan seating. Wear warm base layers under the provided outer kit, and bring extra mid-layers, because sitting still at a hole is the part that catches people out.
Ice fishing days have been on the books since 2005. The guide is there to teach the method, not to pretend every hole produces a pan full of fish, and the snack is planned either way so the stop still has a shape if the ice stays quiet.
Kit and pickup are handled so you can focus on the ride and the wait. The pace stays leisurely on purpose, with time to ask questions at the hole rather than turning the morning into a silent contest.
Pickup is offered from the hotels and meeting points listed for this safari, including Santa Claus Village, selected Ounasvaara hotels, SantaSport, Postmaster Hotel, and the town office at Pirkkakatu 2. The team confirms your collection point and time so you know which lobby to use.
Arrive in warm layers, because outer safari kit is fitted at the house before the snowmobiles leave. Sitting still at the hole is colder than the ride, so a proper hat and mid-layers make the wait much easier.
No. Ice fishing is a wait as much as a result. Most patient guests have a chance, and some days the hole stays quiet.
A snack is still served. If you do catch something, it can be cooked at the fire. Come for the ride and the stop, and treat a fish as a bonus.
Plan for 4 to 5 hours from pickup to drop-off. About three hours are the excursion, including the ride and time at the hole.
Kit and transfers sit around that window. Your confirmation shows the live start time for your date.
Neither is required. The guide explains the machine before you leave and the fishing method once you reach the hole.
If you have done either before, say so. You can take more of the driving or help at the line without turning it into a lesson for the whole group.
Thermal overalls, boots, wool socks, mittens and a helmet are provided for the snowmobile sections. Fishing gear for the hole is with the guide.
Bring a hat and warm base layers. Sitting still at a hole is colder than riding, so extra mid-layers help.
Listed hotels and meeting points in Rovaniemi, or the office on Pirkkakatu 2. The team confirms pickup point and time.
Be ready in your own winter layers. The outer kit is fitted at the house before the ride out to the hole.
Children can often travel in a sled on the way out and watch or try the line with an adult. Share ages with the team before the date.
Very small children get cold quickly when the group is standing still. Extra layers and a realistic wait at the hole make the difference.
Ordinary winter weather is expected. The guide may choose a more sheltered hole if the wind is sharp.
If the trail or the ice is unsafe, the team will contact you to reschedule. Keep your stay number to hand that morning.
Hot drinks and a snack are included. Any catch can be cooked at the fire. It is not a restaurant lunch.
Tell the team about allergies beforehand. Eat a proper meal before or after if you want more than camp food.
Two guests usually share one machine on the ride out to the hole. A single-driving extra may be available if you prefer your own sled.
The ride is leisurely, so sharing is comfortable for most pairs. Children who are not driving sit in a sled rather than on an adult machine.
A phone number you will use during the stay, children's ages, and allergy notes for the snack. That covers pickup and the fire stop.
If anyone is uneasy about sitting still in the cold, mention it so the guide can keep their turn at the hole shorter.
Sobre el centro
Rovaniemi
We have been sharing winter days around Rovaniemi since 2005, first with local teams and friends and now with travellers who want a real feel of life above the Arctic Circle. The work is still rooted in the same thing: small groups, Lappish hospitality, and time outdoors in the last wilderness of Europe.
Guides here grew up with this landscape. Days are built around snowmobile trails, campfire meals from local kitchens, and the quiet of the forest after the city lights fade. We take you into everyday Arctic life, not a staged version of it, and we look after the places we visit so the next generation can enjoy the same snow, silence, and night sky.
