Kids, adults, home-educated groups and over 55s get a regular two-hour slot on Westward Ho! beach, with the same coaches and the same kit each week. You do not need prior surfing experience, and boards, wetsuits, boots and gloves are provided. Times move with the tide, so you get water that suits the group rather than a clock that ignores the sea.
Each club meets at the centre, kits up, then walks the 50 metres to the sand for a briefing that matches that day's tide. Saturday Kids Club, Friday Home Ed, Sunday and Monday Adult Groms, and Wednesday Over 55s each have their own weekly slot. Clock times shift through the autumn so the group is in the water when the beach is working.
You see the same faces most weeks, which is the point of a club rather than a one-off lesson. Coaches can pick up where you left off, move you onto a different board when you are ready, and keep the session social without dropping the safety brief. Book at least three sessions. Confirmation after you book lists the dates and times for the club you have chosen.
Westward Ho! is a two-mile sandy beach that shelves gently, so clubs can spread out and still stay in water that suits mixed ages. RNLI lifeguards cover the summer months, and the bay has held a European Blue Flag for clean water for 16 years.
The centre on Pebblebridge Road sits 50 metres from the sand, next to public parking. Heated changing rooms, showers, toilets, secure storage, a surf shop and a pizza cafe mean parents can wait in the warm while a kids' session runs, and adults can change without using a beach windbreak.
No prior surfing experience is needed. We provide boards, wetsuits, boots and gloves, and we group people inside each club so a first-timer is not left on a peak with regulars. Basic swimming helps your confidence, though sessions stay in shallow water under full supervision.
Children need to be at least 8. Adults and over 55s are welcome on their own clubs, and home-educated groups have a weekday slot so you are not competing with weekend crowds. Bring swimwear and a towel, and we will fit the rest.
Clubs have grown out of more than 30 years of teaching on this beach, with Surfing England Centre of Excellence coaching and a team that already knows the banks. You get a regular slot rather than a one-off holiday lesson, which is how most people actually get comfortable in the sea.
Small groups, kit that is replaced each season, and a building 50 metres from the sand keep the weekly habit easy. Parents and older paddlers often stay on after the first block, which is why the clubs feel more like a local session than a tourist queue.
Meet at 1 Pebblebridge Road, Westward Ho!, EX39 1HN. Public parking is next to the centre, and the beach is a 50-metre walk from the door.
Your booking confirmation lists the dates and the start time for each week, because clock times move with the tide. Arrive early enough to change before the briefing.
Saturday Kids Club, Friday Home Ed, Sunday Adult Groms, Monday Adult Groms and Wednesday Over 55s each have their own weekly slot through autumn. Clock times move with the tide, so a Saturday kids' club might start at 10:00 one week and later the next.
Choose the club that matches the age group when you book. Confirmation then lists the full set of dates and the exact start times for that block.
Pick the club you want, then book at least three sessions at the session rate. Those times move with the tide, so read the confirmation before the first week so you know when to arrive.
If a date does not work, talk to us early rather than missing the briefing, because the group will already be walking to the sand.
No. Clubs take first-timers as well as people who already paddle, and coaches split the water so you are not dropped on a peak that does not match you. Kit is included, so you can arrive without a board or a suit of your own.
Regulars still get something from the weekly slot, because the same coach can move you onto a different board or start talking about unbroken waves once the basics are there. Tell us where you are at when you join so the first week is not wasted on drills you have already done.
Sessions stay in shallow water under full supervision, so you are not asked to swim out the back. A basic swimming ability still helps your confidence when a wave knocks you off, especially on a slightly bigger day.
Kids and over 55s use the same shallow banks as the open lessons. If someone in the group is nervous, say so at the briefing and the coach will keep that person closer in while the rest of the club works a little further out.
Boards, wetsuits, boots and gloves are included for every club. We fit you at the centre, then you walk the 50 metres to the beach already in the suit, which is much easier for kids than changing on the sand.
If a regular wants to bring their own board later in the block, check with the coach first. Plenty of people stay on our foam boards for weeks because they are kinder while the pop-up is still messy.
The centre is about 50 metres from the sand on Pebblebridge Road, with heated changing rooms, showers and a cafe on site. Parents can wait inside during a kids' session rather than standing on a windy wall.
Public parking is next to the building. It fills on Saturday mornings and sunny weekdays, so leave extra time. Secure storage holds dry clothes while you are in the water.
Teaching has run from Westward Ho! since 1988, and this is the only approved surf school on the beach. Surfing England has given the centre its Centre of Excellence mark, which covers coaching, safety, kit and the building.
The clubs exist because people asked for a weekly habit rather than a one-off holiday lesson. That is why you see the same coaches and why more than 70 percent of lessons across the centre are repeat bookings.
Children need swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a drink. A dry hoodie or jumper for afterwards makes the walk back from the beach less of a shiver, especially later in autumn.
Leave phones and anything that cannot take sand in the secure storage or with the adult who is waiting. We provide the board and the suit, so the bag can stay small.
Yes. The over 55s group is for people who want a regular session with others of a similar age, whether they have never surfed or they used to paddle and want to come back to it. Coaches keep the briefings clear and the water choice conservative.
You still get a proper wetsuit, a foam board and a two-hour slot timed to the tide. The social side matters here as much as the surfing, which is why that club stays on its own weekday slot rather than being folded into the adult groms.
We watch the forecast and will be in touch if wind, swell or a storm means the club should not run. Light rain is usually fine. We will not send a kids' or over 55s group into a messy sea just to keep a date.
When we cancel, we look at another date in the block or another way to make the session up. Your confirmation is the place to check the planned times, because some weeks already move by an hour to catch a better tide.

Really enjoyed it, thank you!
Lovely, friendly atmosphere which helps to gain confidence. Excellent teaching skills with Finn
The session was great my husband and children really enjoyed it and felt it was really well run with the right level of support for each of them. Thank you for an amazong morning during our holidays.
We had an amazing time with good instructors, and a beach that's really suitable for beginners. It's not too deep so you can stand up whilst also having waves that you can surf.
Everything we’d hoped for 😊
My 12 year old had such a wonderful time.
