Deep in the Ferriere Valley, a protected biogenetic reserve hides in the hills above Amalfi where ancient woodland, clear streams and rare plants survive in a cool gorge that feels worlds away from the busy coast below. Over four hours on valley paths, your guide explains the inverted vegetation and geology that make this corner of the Amalfi Coast so unusual.
Gather in Pianillo for a short briefing on the route before setting off on the path that drops into the Ferriere Valley. The Rio Canneto runs through the gorge below, and as you descend the air grows cooler and damper, supporting ferns and woodland plants that contrast sharply with the dry Mediterranean scrub on the cliffs above.
Pace follows the group, with pauses at viewpoints, stream crossings and shaded sections where the valley floor opens out. Because the route stays off the main tourist trails, you see a wilder side of the Amalfi Coast than most visitors ever reach on foot.
Rare flora, sea air and mountain winds shaping this microclimate, and stories of the valley's history fill the walk. Roughly four hours on uneven but rewarding paths end with a climb back towards Pianillo and views over the coast as the loop closes.
Between the mountain village of Scala and the town of Amalfi, the Ferriere Valley is carved deep into the limestone above the coast. Rocky walls shelter the gorge from cold northern winds while warm air rises from the sea, creating growing conditions that support plants rarely found elsewhere on the Amalfi Coast.
Piazza Paolo Capasso in Pianillo marks the meeting point at the start of the path network that leads down into the reserve. Amalfi and the coastal road sit a short drive away when the trek finishes.
Moderate fitness suits a four-hour walk with uneven ground and stream crossings along the valley floor. Guests from age ten can join when accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the trek.
Sturdy closed walking shoes with good grip are essential, along with at least one litre of water and snacks for the four hours on the path. Knee or mobility concerns are worth mentioning when you book so your guide can advise on the route before the day.
Guides who know which sections of the valley are passable after rain can pace a mixed-ability group through the gorge without anyone feeling left behind. Commentary on the ecology and history of the reserve turns a beautiful walk into a proper introduction to one of Italy's most remarkable natural sites.
Few trails reach the heart of the Ferriere reserve on foot. A small group size keeps the trek personal rather than a long queue on the path, and you leave with a genuine sense of the wild Amalfi that sits just above the famous coastline.
The trek lasts about four hours on moderate terrain through the Ferriere Valley. Expect uneven paths, some descent into the gorge and stream crossings along the Rio Canneto.
You should be comfortable walking for several hours on hill paths. This is a guided group trek, not a flat coastal stroll.
Meet at Piazza Paolo Capasso in Pianillo, above the Amalfi Coast. Arrive around fifteen minutes before the start time so the guide can brief the group.
Public transport serves the Amalfi area. Parking in the villages can be limited in summer, so allow extra time if you are driving.
Children from age ten can join when accompanied by a responsible adult. The valley paths include uneven ground that suits older children and active families.
Younger guests may find the four-hour duration and moderate grade tiring. Ask before booking if you are unsure about suitability.
Group size runs from two to fifteen guests. The minimum of two means the trek runs as a small-group departure rather than a solo walk.
Larger parties may need to check availability or book a private departure through the booking system.
