Train like a heat with video feedback, priority drills and fitness work aimed at riders preparing for contests or serious club squads.
Mornings often start with a structured warm-up and goal review tied to any contest you are preparing for, then move to the peak for timed surfs or mock heats with priority drills that feel like real event pressure. Coaches film from shore or water and debrief between blocks so you leave with clips to study and one or two technical cues to test on the next heat. Video-focused options lean even harder into playback, breaking down take-off timing, first-turn commitment and finish moves frame by frame.
Expect direct feedback, homework drills on land or in flat water, and session intensity aligned with whether you are peaking for a weekend event or building base fitness mid-season. When swell is wrong for heat practice we switch to fitness, flag theory or analysis of contest footage rather than pretending mediocre waves are a substitute for strategy work. You finish knowing what to practise before the next heat and how your scoring habits looked on camera.
Competition training runs on the same Somo peaks where many Cantabrian riders learnt to surf, with sandbars that reward speed and commitment when the tide is right. Calle del Surf is your daily meeting point beside Playa de Somo.
We use the wide beach for mock heats, flag drills and fitness work when the banks are flat or blown out. Santander is a quick ferry away for teams who want a team dinner or an extra rest day away from the salt air.
You should already compete or surf at advanced club level with reliable take-offs in chest-high surf and a basic understanding of priority and heat flow.
Minimum age twelve. Parental consent is required for minors joining intensive blocks, and we ask for honest notes on upcoming events in advance so tapering and volume make sense for your calendar.
Video and competition coaching use the same water team as our daily lessons, so advanced riders get feedback from coaches who still teach beginners every week and remember what good foundations look like.
When conditions allow we film from the beach or water so you can review stance and line choice between sets. Clips stay practical: we focus on one or two changes you can try on the very next wave.
Meet at Calle del Surf, 11, 39140 Somo on the promenade beside Playa de Somo. Use public parking near the beach and walk to the school. Arrive ten minutes early so we can fit wetsuits and assign boards.
These competition sessions are designed for the ability range shown on the listing, and we split groups on the beach so you surf alongside riders working on similar skills. That keeps feedback relevant whether you are catching your first white water or tightening turns on a green wave.
Tell us how often you surf, what board you usually ride and any goals for the holiday when you arrive. We use that to place you with the right coach and group on the day, and we can adjust if the swell is better suited to a mellower bank.
Each standard lesson lasts about two hours door to door, including kit issue, a land warm-up, safety briefing and coached time in the water. We build in short breaks so cold or tired riders can reset without feeling rushed back into the sea.
Multi-day course options spread several of those sessions across consecutive days, which helps muscle memory stick better than a single visit. Packages cover the full course length so you keep the same coach team and board allocation through the week.
We supply the board, full wetsuit and leash you need for the session, chosen for your height, weight and the day's conditions. Beginners usually start on soft tops; improvers and advanced riders may move to hard boards when coaches agree you are ready.
Bring swimwear, a towel and warm clothes for afterwards. Changing rooms, showers and lockers sit at our promenade base, so you can leave street clothes securely before walking to the water with your instructor.
The minimum age for this product is shown in Key Details on the listing. Younger children are usually happier in our dedicated kids lessons, where sessions are shorter, games-led and taught with even smaller soft boards.
Anyone under sixteen should have a parent or guardian on the beach within sight unless we agree a different arrangement in writing. Share allergies, asthma or joint issues on the day so coaches can adapt pacing and rest stops.
We cap group size for this product so instructors can see every rider in the shore break and call individuals into suitable waves. The maximum number of participants appears in Key Details and reflects how many people one lead coach can manage safely in typical Somo conditions.
If you want tighter ratios, ask about private tuition or intensive camps. On busy summer days we may split large groups across two coaches rather than stretching one group too thin.
You should be comfortable moving through waist-deep water, floating briefly and following verbal instructions while wearing a wetsuit. We stay inside lifeguarded zones and choose banks where you can stand between waves whenever your level needs that security.
If you are nervous in the sea, say so when you meet your coach. We can spend extra time on shore skills, partner you near the sandbar or suggest a calmer tide window rather than pushing you into deeper water before you feel ready.
Light rain and grey skies rarely cancel surf lessons because wetsuits keep you warm once you are moving. We only pause or reschedule when lifeguards close bathing areas, lightning is nearby, or swell and wind combine to make the planned bank genuinely unsafe for the group level.
When that happens we let you know as early as we can and agree another time that suits the conditions. Your safety always outweighs running a session just because a date looked fine on a forecast.
Yes. Multi-day packages line up several consecutive lessons so you progress from white water toward green waves within one holiday week.
Returning guests and camp students can often add extra single days when coaches have space, but packaged courses give you the best continuity of instructor and board allocation across the week.
Transport to Somo is not included in the lesson fee. Most guests drive to public car parks near Playa de Somo, use regional buses, or take the short ferry from Santander and walk along the promenade to Calle del Surf.
If you are flying into Santander or Bilbao, we can suggest taxi firms and typical journey times when you ask at the beach school. Allow extra minutes in summer when parking fills on sunny weekends.
Arrive at the beach school on Calle del Surf a few minutes before your session time so we can fit wetsuits, assign boards and walk to the sand together for the warm-up.
Bring honest notes about fitness, injuries and surfing history so the briefing can be tailored. If conditions shift overnight we may adjust start time slightly and will let you know rather than expecting you to guess from the forecast alone.
