Paddle beneath the dramatic fin of Chiang Dao mountain on a full-day river kayak through orchards, rice fields and quiet northern Thai countryside. The Ping River winds south across the valley with gentle Class 1+ water, creek-like bends and peaceful riverbank life that makes this one of the finest scenic paddle days north of Chiang Mai.
Your guide meets you at our adventure base after hotel pickup for a safety briefing and basic river kayaking lesson before the drive north into Chiang Dao valley. At the put-in, paddle strokes and boat control are checked on calm water before the main downstream section.
The morning section follows lively but manageable current through creek-like features that reward attentive paddling without demanding prior experience. Your guide coaches line choice and bracing through the livelier bends while keeping the group together.
Lunch comes at a rocky dam stop before an easy afternoon float with sweeping views of the Chiang Dao range until you reach Chiang Dao town and the transfer back to your hotel around 5:30pm.
Chiang Dao lies about 75 km north of Chiang Mai where the Ping River cuts through a broad valley of orchards, corn fields and rolling hills beneath Thailand's third-highest peak. Clean spring-fed water flows through forest and farmland upstream, keeping the Mae Ping clear and green through the paddle.
Life along the banks moves at river pace: farmers tending crops, fishermen wading the shallows and village scenes that feel far from the city despite an easy day trip from Chiang Mai. The Chiang Dao massif dominates the skyline throughout the drive and paddle. Seasonal water levels change the character of the creek-like upper section, but the valley always rewards with open views and quiet countryside between Chiang Mai and the northern hills.
Beginners are welcome and basic river kayaking instruction is included on the water. You should be comfortable sitting in a kayak for several hours and happy to get wet on occasional splashy sections.
Wear quick-dry clothes, secure footwear and bring a change for the drive back. Children from 6 can join on a double kayak with an adult. Paddlers from 13 may use a single kayak if confident following guide instructions on moving water.
Our Chiang Mai team runs river and lake kayaking year round, with hotel pickup, quality boats and guides who read northern Thailand's water levels every week. You'll get a thorough on-water briefing and coaching before we launch, so beginners feel supported and experienced paddlers still get a proper day out.
We keep groups small, choose put-ins for the season and handle lunch and transfers as part of the day. We're local specialists who've been sharing these rivers and reservoirs with guests for years.

Guides never rush anyone down the river, so plan any evening activities for later in the evening.

Seasonal flow changes the character slightly; guides adjust the put-in and pace for safe, enjoyable paddling year round.
Light rain often makes valley paddling atmospheric and trips usually run year round. Heavy rain or unsafe water levels may lead to rescheduling or route changes at the guide's discretion. Light rain often adds atmosphere without stopping the trip.
