A half-day canyoning experience designed for beginners or those wanting a relaxed introduction to canyon environments. Everything on the route is optional, so you can choose how far to go with jumps, slides and abseils depending on comfort level. It’s a steady descent with simple sections and optional challenges throughout.
The session begins with meeting your guide at a designated location where a full safety briefing is provided. You’ll be fitted with wetsuits, helmets and canyoning equipment before heading to the chosen canyon for the day. The guide selects the most suitable canyon based on conditions and group ability, ensuring it matches the Level 1 experience.
Once in the canyon, you’ll move through a natural river environment featuring pools, slides and rock formations. Jumps, slides and abseils up to 14 metres may be available, but nothing is compulsory, so you can skip any feature and continue along the main route.
The descent continues with a mix of walking, swimming and easy progression through the canyon until reaching the exit point. From there, it’s a short return walk before returning equipment and finishing the activity.
Canyoning takes place across natural mountain canyons in the Pyrenees, an area known for its river-cut gorges, clear pools and varied terrain. The environment changes throughout the descent, moving between narrow rock sections and open water areas.
Meeting points can include Aínsa, Escalona, Bielsa, Biescas, Broto and Torla depending on the canyon chosen. The guide selects the most appropriate canyon for the group, and while participants cannot choose directly, popular Level 1 options often include Miraval, Barrosa and Viandico due to their balance of easy progression and optional features.
A basic level of fitness is required, including the ability to walk on uneven ground and swim in water. No previous canyoning experience is needed, and the activity is structured to support complete beginners.
Participants should be comfortable being active outdoors for a few hours. It is not suitable for those with very low fitness levels or no confidence in water environments.
The guiding team is highly experienced in Pyrenean canyon environments and focuses on safety, clear communication and controlled progression throughout every session. Each descent is carefully managed so participants understand what to do at every stage.
Canyons are selected by the guides based on weather, water levels and group ability, ensuring the chosen route is always suitable for Level 1. This approach provides a safe introduction while still offering optional challenges for those who want them.
Level 1 is designed for beginners, where everything is optional including jumps, slides and abseils. It’s a relaxed introduction with easy progression and no compulsory technical sections.
Level 1–2 is a full-day experience with no prior experience needed, but it can include mandatory abseils up to 20 metres depending on the canyon. It suits active people with good fitness who are used to hiking or regular outdoor activity.
Level 2 is a half-day option with no overall mandatory jumps, but it may include a compulsory 3 metre jump and abseils up to around 20–25 metres. It requires good coordination, agility and confidence moving through water and rocky terrain.
Level 3 is the most technical option and requires previous canyoning or climbing experience. Abseiling is always mandatory, and the routes are more physically demanding with longer approaches and more challenging terrain.
Dry Level 1–2 is a beginner-friendly dry canyon option with no water sections, designed for colder conditions or for those who prefer to stay out of the water.
You can explore the other available levels below.
You can’t select the canyon directly, as the guides choose the most suitable one on the day based on conditions and group ability. This ensures the route is appropriate for the Level 1 experience and keeps safety consistent across all groups.
If you have a preference, you can add it in your booking notes and the team will try to accommodate it where possible. However, the final decision always sits with the guide.
No experience is required at all for this level. It is designed specifically for beginners, with full instruction provided before you enter the canyon.
Your guide will explain how to move through water sections, use equipment and approach each feature. Support continues throughout the descent so you are never left unsure.
The full experience lasts around 5 hours including briefing, equipment fitting, travel to the canyon and return. This allows time for preparation and a steady pace throughout the day.
You will spend approximately 2.5 hours inside the canyon itself. The rest of the time is used for setup, walking approaches and transitions.
Yes, all jumps, slides and abseils are optional on Level 1. You can choose to skip any feature and continue along an easier route instead.
This makes it suitable for mixed confidence groups, as everyone can take part at their own comfort level while still completing the canyon together.
Yes, a basic ability to swim is required as there are pools and flowing water sections. You will wear a wetsuit which provides buoyancy and warmth.
Strong swimming ability is not necessary, but you should feel comfortable moving in water and following guide instructions.
