Leave the city for a full day that pairs a cable car to the top of the Magaliesberg with a guided horse trail through a nearby reserve. You ride in the saddle for about two hours at a pace that suits beginners and returning riders, then take in wide views over Hartbeespoort and the dam from the summit before heading back to your accommodation.
Collection starts at your hotel, guesthouse or agreed address in the greater Johannesburg and Pretoria area, including OR Tambo and Lanseria airports when arranged. Your guide sets the order of the day around weather and traffic, but you can expect time in the reserve on horseback first or the cableway first depending on what runs smoothest that morning.
On the horse trail, staff match you to a calm horse and keep the group together while you look for antelope and other reserve wildlife from the track. The cableway section covers about 1.2 km to the summit, where you can walk the viewing areas and buy lunch or drinks at your own pace before the return transfer.
Hartbeespoort sits northwest of Johannesburg where the Magaliesberg rises above the dam and surrounding bush. The cableway looks out over the suburb, the water and the rolling highveld, which makes the climb feel far from the city even though you are still within easy reach of Sandton and Pretoria.
The horse trail runs in a reserve setting where open grassland and bush give you a clear view of animals from horseback without needing a long drive into a distant park. Your day is built around these two bases, with road transfers handled so you are not juggling hire cars or parking at each stop.
No riding experience is required because the trail is guided and horses are chosen to suit nervous riders as well as regulars. Children are welcome from age four when booked with an adult, and you should share heights, weights and any health concerns when you reserve so tack and horses can be planned.
Comfortable closed shoes, sun protection and a light layer for the cable car deck are sensible. If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or needs step-free access, tell us when you book so we can confirm what is possible on the cableway and at the stables.
One booking covers both the cableway and the horse trail, with pickup and drop-off in the city so you are not piecing together taxis between two separate tickets. Guides know both venues and keep the day moving without rushing the riding or the time on the mountain.
Groups stay small enough for personal help in the saddle and clear briefings at the cable car base. You deal with one team from the morning collection to the evening return, which matters when you are travelling with children or mixed riding ability.
Your driver meets you at the hotel, guesthouse or agreed address in Johannesburg, Pretoria or at the airport arrivals area when pre-arranged. Luggage stays at your accommodation while you travel with a day bag for sun protection and any personal snacks.
At the stables you meet your horse and guide for a roughly two-hour trail through the reserve. The pace stays comfortable for first-time riders while you watch for antelope and other wildlife from the track.
The cable car climbs about 1.2 km to the summit for views over Hartbeespoort, the dam and the surrounding hills. You have free time on top for photos, short walks and optional lunch or drinks before the descent.
After the cableway, transfer back to the same pickup point in the city or at the airport if your itinerary continues that evening. Your guide confirms drop-off timing once the summit visit ends.
Plan on about seven hours door to door, including transfers from your stay, time in the reserve on horseback and the cableway visit. The riding section is roughly two hours in the saddle, with the rest of the day for travel, the cable car and breaks.
Exact timings shift with traffic, weather and how busy the cableway is. Your guide keeps you updated if the order of activities changes so you still fit both parts in comfortably.
No prior riding is needed. Horses are calm and matched to your experience, and staff stay with the group throughout the trail.
Share honestly if anyone is nervous or has never sat in a saddle before so the yard can allow extra mounting time. The pace is set for sightseeing rather than sport riding.
Children from age four can join when accompanied by a responsible adult, in line with how family bookings are handled on this product. Adult tickets apply from age twelve on the live booking calendar.
Send children's ages when you reserve so harnesses, horses and seating on the cable car can be checked in advance.
Pickup is from hotels, guesthouses and residential addresses around Johannesburg and Pretoria, including OR Tambo (ORTIA) and Lanseria (MQP) when you provide flight details in good time.
Send the full address, a mobile number and any gate or security instructions. Collection times are confirmed before the day so you are not waiting in the lobby without a contact.
Lunch is not included in the tour price. The summit has cafés and rest areas where you can buy food and drinks during the cableway stop.
Bring water and a snack if you prefer not to rely on what is open on the mountain that day. Your guide can suggest timing so you eat without missing the return cable car slot.
Long trousers or comfortable jeans work well in the saddle, with closed shoes that cover your toes. Sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses help on both the trail and the open summit deck.
A light jacket is useful if the cable car is breezy. Avoid loose scarves or dangling jewellery that could catch on tack or barriers.
You can cancel with a full refund when you give at least twenty-four hours notice before the activity start time. Inside that window the booking is treated as non-refundable unless the operator cancels for weather or safety.
If plans change, contact us as early as possible so spaces on the trail and cableway can be released for other guests.
High wind or electrical storms can pause the cableway for safety. If that happens, your guide will adjust the plan, which may mean riding first or waiting for operations to reopen.
When the operator must cancel the whole day for weather, you are entitled to a full refund or a new date subject to availability on the live calendar.
This departure can take from one guest up to ten in the same booking group. Larger parties may need to split across two dates if the calendar is tight.
Tell us your exact party size when you pay so horse numbers and vehicle space are reserved together rather than assumed on the day.
We need pickup address, a mobile number, passenger names and ages, and any optional emergency contact details you are happy to share. Weight ranges for riders help the stables assign horses.
Flight numbers help for airport collections. After you book, watch for messages about collection time and what to bring so the morning starts smoothly.
