Spend a day discovering the waters around Benbecula with a guided snorkelling and freediving experience that can be as relaxed or adventurous as you like. With Thomas on hand throughout the day and all equipment provided, it's a fantastic way to experience the island from a completely different perspective.
Your day begins in Balivanich, where you'll be fitted with wetsuits and equipment selected from a large range of sizes. Getting the right fit is an important part of the experience, helping you stay comfortable and warm while spending time in the water. Once everyone is ready, you'll head to a location chosen according to the weather and sea conditions.
One of the benefits of being on Benbecula is the variety of sites available. With beaches, sea lochs, sheltered bays and both east and west coast access, there are plenty of options depending on what the day brings. Calm, clear water is often available, but locations can also be chosen to offer a more energetic experience if conditions allow.
Once in the water, you'll have the opportunity to explore kelp forests, rocky seabeds, marine life and the unique underwater landscapes found around the island. If you'd like some pointers along the way, Thomas can offer informal guidance, but the focus is on enjoying the experience rather than formal instruction. Between water sessions, the dive bus provides a comfortable place to get changed, warm up, enjoy a tea or coffee, and prepare for the next part of the adventure.
Located in the heart of the Outer Hebrides, Benbecula offers excellent access to a wide variety of coastal environments. The island is surrounded by clear Atlantic waters and connected to neighbouring islands by causeways, creating countless opportunities to explore different snorkelling and freediving locations.
Beyond the water, you'll find wide beaches, machair grasslands, rocky shorelines and open island scenery. The changing coastline means every trip can feel different, with locations selected to make the most of the conditions on the day rather than following a fixed route.
No previous snorkelling or freediving experience is required. As long as you're comfortable in the water and have a reasonable level of fitness, you can enjoy the experience whether it's your first time using a snorkel or you've spent time exploring underwater before.
Please bring swimwear, a towel, drinking water and a packed lunch. It is also recommended that you eat breakfast before arriving. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied in the water by a responsible adult or nominated guardian.
Having spent years exploring the waters around the Outer Hebrides, Tom knows how to find locations that suit both the conditions and the people joining him. This flexibility helps create a more enjoyable experience and allows each session to feel unique.
Rather than following a strict programme, the day is built around making the most of the island's incredible underwater environment. Small group sizes, quality equipment, local knowledge and a relaxed atmosphere all combine to create a memorable day on and in the water.
Hi there,
If you're looking for some really good fun and excitement whilst here on the Isle of Benbecula, then why not contact me and come for a snorkel / freedive!
I offer equipment hire with 'company' in the water plus 'informal instruction' if you'd like some. (snorkel clearing whilst 1 metre below!)
Snorkelling is an excellent activity, it's quick and super easy to get the hang of, and a real thrill - if that's what you're looking for!
The water around here is crystal clear and teeming with underwater life, with the west and east coast just a short drive apart and with numerous lochs, it's always possible to find a stunning location with calm water. Or if you prefer some swell, then we can carefully choose an alternative spot where you'll be in for a choppy, turbulent ride.
Squeezing into a wetsuit with an additional hood, socks, boots and gloves will ensure you're nice and warm and also protected from jellyfish if these were ever of any concern to yourself.
I will endeavour to provide you with the very tightest, snuggest suit or suits I have for your individual needs, be it a 6 or 7mm arctic or a clever combination of both a 3mm and a 5mm, this, as your new personal 'head to toe' flexible and sleek rubber skin will allow you to fin through the water with absolute ease - drag free, smoothly slipping through the water with little resistance. This, now, your warm and cosy new skin will allow you to really sense the moving environment around you, to feel the presence of the kelp as your body brushes past or even through its envelopment. I snorkel / freedive all year round in cold wind and stormy rain, wearing just wetsuits, and would not dream of wearing a loose, cumbersome dry suit to perform this wonderful, awesome activity. Freediving is more than just a visual tour; it's a full-on experience for your body and your mind, relaxation, trepidation, excitement, and exertion all mixed in to give you the best natural high!
I have a great 'Dive Bus' which I use as a base to do this activity from, it has plenty of space and head height inside, providing the perfect location to get changed in and enjoy a warming cup of tea / coffee. It's also a storage facility when needed for my large selection of wetsuits, masks, snorkels and jet fins etc... I also have quickly adjustable weight belts which can be used to offset the buoyancy of your wetsuit and dive knives for use at applicable locations. The bus is very nice inside, with comfy waterproof seating, lots of pictures and charts, plus a powerful stereo, to get us in the mood if the sky is looking a little cloudy!
I've got my huge range of wetsuits stored in my heated office at 41 Airport Rd. You can contact me to come along for a sizing session to find the perfect fit.
You can then, on the same day or a later date, book a snorkel / freedive!
Pricing for my 'hire with company' service is as follows:
£155 each person for 2 or more people,
£190 for 1 individual person.
Nb - This is a real 'full on' activity, and you will not be disappointed. I tend to cater more for adults; those who are under 16 must be in the water with another responsible nominee.
The 'wet' activity lasts from 2 - 4 hours; this time period includes time for donning and doffing the kit, plus the actual time in the water! But if you include meeting and greeting / travel to and from the dive site, etc., we're talking 7 hours!!!
No. This experience is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who have snorkelled or freedived before.
If you're new to it all, Tom can offer informal guidance and help you become comfortable with the equipment and being in the water. More experienced guests are free to explore and enjoy the environment at their own pace.
Yes, everything needed for the activity is provided, including wetsuits, fins, masks, snorkels, gloves, boots and hoods.
A large selection of sizes is available, allowing equipment to be matched as closely as possible to ensure comfort throughout the day.
The waters around Benbecula can be cool throughout the year, which is why suitable wetsuits and thermal equipment are provided.
Being properly fitted into the correct wetsuit makes a significant difference, helping you stay comfortable while spending extended periods in the water.
The area is home to a variety of marine species including fish, crabs, sea stars, anemones and other coastal wildlife.
Conditions change from day to day, so every session offers slightly different opportunities to observe the underwater environment.
Not at all. You can spend the entire session snorkelling on the surface if that is what you prefer.
Those who wish to explore below the surface can do so at their own comfort level, but there is never any pressure to dive deeper than you want to.
The water-based part of the experience typically lasts between 2 and 4 hours, including time spent getting equipment on and off.
The overall day is longer, allowing time for meeting, travelling to suitable locations, warming up between sessions and enjoying the experience without feeling rushed.
Yes, children aged 10 and above are welcome when accompanied by an adult.
Anyone under 16 must remain in the water with a responsible adult or nominated guardian throughout the activity.
