Explore the limestone cliffs of Arrábida above Sesimbra on a half-day rappelling circuit. You work through three guided abseils between 5 and 35 metres, with Atlantic views and the natural park as your backdrop throughout.
After meeting at Porto da Baleeira, the team briefs you on harnesses, helmets and rope technique before you reach the first cliff edge. The opening abseil is a confidence-building descent at around 5 metres, giving you time to get comfortable with the kit and the commands used on the rope.
From there you progress to longer drops that build height and exposure gradually. Each abseil is set on natural rock above Sesimbra and the coast, with guides managing anchors and backup safety throughout. You move between sectors at a steady pace with time to recover between descents.
The final abseil is the highlight at up to 35 metres, where you drop down the cliff face with clear views over the Arrábida coastline. The session wraps with kit collection and a debrief once everyone is safely off the ropes.
The circuit runs on the limestone cliffs of the Arrábida Natural Park above Sesimbra, on Portugal's Setúbal coast south of Lisbon. The rock is warm-toned and pocketed, with scrub and sea air on the breeze, and the sectors sit close enough to the harbour that the day stays focused on climbing rather than long transfers.
Sesimbra itself is a fishing town wrapped around a sheltered bay, with cafés and beaches at the foot of the hills. The abseil lines look out over the Atlantic and the park's protected coastline, so even short pauses between descents feel part of a wider outdoor day in one of the region's best-known adventure settings.
No prior abseiling experience is required, but a moderate level of fitness helps because you will be on your feet for several hours and may walk on uneven ground near the cliff tops. You should be comfortable with heights once you are clipped in and ready to lean back on the rope.
Participants aged 16 and over are welcome. The activity suits anyone who wants a structured introduction to cliff abseiling with professional safety cover, including first-timers who are happy to follow guide instructions on the rope.
Guides work on these cliffs regularly and set up each abseil with checked anchors, backup systems and clear briefing before anyone goes over the edge. Group sizes stay manageable so you get individual attention on technique and confidence at each drop.
Equipment is provided for the session, from harness and helmet to ropes and descenders, so you can focus on the experience rather than sourcing kit. The circuit is designed to build from a short first descent to a longer final abseil, giving a satisfying arc even on a single half-day outing.
Meet at Porto da Baleeira on the west side of Sesimbra, postcode 2970-738. The harbour sits below the Arrábida cliffs and is the usual gathering point before the short transfer or walk to the abseil sectors.
From Lisbon, follow the A2 south and take the N378 towards Sesimbra; allow around 45 minutes in normal traffic. Parking is available near the harbour and along nearby streets. Arrive a few minutes early so the team can fit harnesses and run through safety checks before heading to the cliffs.
