Over eight days you'll trek from Stepantsminda through iconic Caucasus scenery, crossing the Gergeti Glacier and staying in mountain huts as you acclimatise for summit day. Glacier skills training and acclimatisation hikes prepare you for the final ascent to 5,054 metres.
You'll pass the famous Gergeti Trinity Church, ring the bell at Betlemi Hut before your summit attempt, and enjoy full-board meals throughout the expedition. A reserve day is built into the schedule for weather flexibility.
Mount Kazbek is one of the most famous peaks in the Caucasus and offers an excellent introduction to high-altitude mountaineering. Rising to 5,054 metres, this dormant stratovolcano sits close to the border between Georgia and Russia and provides an unforgettable combination of glacier travel, mountain scenery and summit achievement.
Over eight days, you'll follow a structured acclimatisation programme designed to prepare you for summit day. Combining mountain hut stays, glacier crossings, practical training and gradual altitude gain, the expedition provides an ideal balance between challenge, preparation and adventure in one of Georgia's most spectacular mountain regions.
This expedition is led by experienced mountain professionals who specialise in high-altitude trekking, glacier travel and alpine mountaineering. Careful route planning, structured acclimatisation and ongoing support throughout the expedition help create a safe and rewarding experience for climbers of varying backgrounds.
Small group sizes allow guides to provide more personalised support throughout the journey. Combined with extensive local knowledge and a commitment to responsible mountain travel, participants can focus fully on the climb while the logistics and mountain planning are handled by experienced professionals.
After arriving in Tbilisi, you'll meet your guide and begin the scenic journey into the Caucasus Mountains. The transfer to Stepantsminda takes approximately three hours and passes through dramatic mountain landscapes, river valleys and winding roads.
Upon arrival, you'll check into your accommodation, complete a full equipment check and arrange any necessary gear rentals. The day concludes with a traditional Georgian dinner and a briefing covering the expedition ahead.
The ascent begins with a hike towards Sabertse Pass. Along the route, you'll pass the famous Gergeti Trinity Church, one of Georgia's most photographed landmarks, set against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek.
Continuing higher into the mountains, you'll reach Altihut at approximately 3,014 metres. Main expedition equipment is transported separately, allowing for a more comfortable ascent while enjoying the surrounding scenery.
Today's route leads across the impressive Gergeti Glacier as you continue towards Betlemi Hut at 3,650 metres. This section introduces participants to the glacier environment while gaining further altitude.
After arriving at the hut, there is time to rest, hydrate and recover while enjoying views across the surrounding peaks and glaciers.
Acclimatisation hikes take you to elevations of around 4,000 metres, either towards Kazbek Pass or the slopes of Mount Ortsveri. Both options help your body adapt to the altitude while providing excellent mountain views.
A dedicated training day follows, focusing on glacier travel, roped movement, self-arrest techniques and ice axe skills. These sessions help build confidence and prepare participants for the summit attempt. There is also time to visit the small chapel near Betlemi Hut, where many climbers follow the local tradition of ringing the bell before their ascent.
Summit day begins before dawn as you set out for the highest point of Mount Kazbek. The ascent typically takes between seven and ten hours and involves glacier travel, snow slopes and steady climbing at high altitude.
Upon reaching the summit at 5,054 metres, you'll be rewarded with expansive views across the Caucasus. After celebrating the achievement, you'll begin the descent back to Betlemi Hut, which usually takes a further five to seven hours.
An additional day is included in case weather conditions prevent the summit attempt from taking place on the planned date.
This flexibility helps maximise the chances of reaching the summit while maintaining a strong focus on safety and mountain conditions.
The final day begins with the descent back to Stepantsminda before transferring to Tbilisi.
Participants may choose to continue exploring Georgia after the expedition or head directly to the airport for their onward journey.
Accommodation is provided throughout the expedition and includes a guesthouse stay in Stepantsminda as well as accommodation in mountain huts during the ascent.
The mountain huts provide a practical and comfortable base for acclimatisation, training and summit preparation. While facilities are simpler than those found in the valley, they offer direct access to the mountain and an authentic high-altitude mountaineering experience.
Previous mountain experience is beneficial but not always essential for Mount Kazbek. Participants should be comfortable hiking for multiple consecutive days and have a good level of fitness before joining the expedition.
The acclimatisation programme and glacier training sessions are designed to help participants prepare for summit day, making Kazbek a popular first high-altitude mountaineering objective.
Mount Kazbek is considered a challenging high-altitude climb rather than a highly technical mountaineering route. The primary challenges come from altitude, weather conditions and the physical demands of summit day.
Participants should expect long days on their feet, glacier travel and exposure to changing mountain conditions. Proper preparation and fitness are important for a successful ascent.
The expedition is generally suitable for participants aged 18 and over due to the physical demands and mountain environment involved.
If younger participants wish to join, please send a request before booking. Previous experience, fitness levels and overall suitability can then be assessed individually.
Yes. Glacier travel forms part of the ascent route and participants should expect to use crampons and an ice axe during the expedition.
Training is included before the summit attempt, allowing participants to practise key skills and build confidence in a controlled environment.
Accommodation combines a guesthouse stay in Stepantsminda with overnight stays in mountain huts higher on the route. The huts provide shelter, meals and a comfortable place to rest before summit day.
Facilities are basic compared to hotels but are well suited to the demands of mountaineering expeditions and allow climbers to stay close to the route.
Weather conditions in the Caucasus can change rapidly, particularly at higher elevations. Strong winds, snowfall or poor visibility may affect summit plans.
A reserve day is included within the itinerary to improve flexibility and provide alternative opportunities should conditions not be suitable on the planned summit day.
Yes, specialist mountaineering insurance is required for all participants. Your policy should cover high-altitude trekking, glacier travel, emergency evacuation and medical treatment.
It is important to review your policy carefully before travelling to ensure all planned expedition activities are included.
Absolutely. Many participants choose to spend additional time exploring Georgia either before or after the expedition.
Tbilisi, the country's capital, is known for its historic architecture, food scene and welcoming atmosphere, making it an excellent place to begin or finish your adventure in the Caucasus.
A strong level of cardiovascular fitness and leg strength is essential for summit day, which involves seven to ten hours of climbing at high altitude. Training with a loaded pack on hills and stairs in the months before departure is highly recommended.
The acclimatisation programme helps your body adapt gradually, but arriving fit gives you the best chance of enjoying the climb and reaching the summit.
The expedition begins with a meeting in Tbilisi, where your guide will collect the group for the transfer to Stepantsminda. Full arrival details and meeting instructions are confirmed after booking.
Scenic airport pickup from Tbilisi is included in the expedition price. If you are already in Georgia, alternative meeting arrangements can be discussed in advance.
