Learn the essentials of speleology in Mallorca with this structured introductory course. Over four days of training, you’ll gain the confidence to move safely through both horizontal and vertical caves while combining practical experience with guided theory. With expert instruction, you’ll leave with the foundations to continue your caving adventures independently.
The course runs over four days, each focused on a different aspect of caving. On the first day, you’ll explore a horizontal cavity, learning essential movement skills, equipment handling, and how to stay safe in an underground environment.
Day two takes place on exterior walls where you’ll practice vertical progression in daylight, building rope-handling skills for safe descents and ascents.
On days three and four, the group moves into vertical cavities of up to -100m and +100m respectively, where you’ll put everything into practice. The final day is adapted to the overall ability of the group, ensuring that everyone progresses at a suitable pace while gaining confidence. Throughout the course, theoretical knowledge is supported by discussions and guidance, and your instructors will answer questions as they arise.
The course is held in Mallorca, one of Spain’s best-known islands for speleology, offering an extraordinary range of caves and shafts. With both horizontal passages and deep vertical systems, the island provides the ideal environment for structured speleology training.
Meeting points will be confirmed before each day of the course to suit the chosen caves. The island’s underground diversity, combined with its natural landscapes above ground, makes Mallorca a unique place to learn the art of caving.
A good level of physical fitness is required as you will need to carry a heavy backpack and cope with the demands of underground movement. Confidence in enclosed spaces is also important to fully enjoy the course.
The minimum age to take part is 18. Participants must also declare any relevant medical conditions in advance so instructors can ensure the activities are suitable. No previous caving experience is required, making this course perfect for beginners who want to build solid skills.
This course is led by experienced cavers with extensive backgrounds in Catalonia’s most established speleology clubs. Their expertise and passion for the sport provide you with reliable training and a safe introduction to caving.
The centre was founded in 2016 by two cavers who left Barcelona to dedicate themselves to guiding and teaching in Mallorca. Since then, they have helped many participants learn the skills needed to enjoy caves safely while sharing their enthusiasm for the underground world.
No prior caving experience is required for this course. It is designed for complete beginners who are motivated to learn and develop safe caving techniques. All participants start with the basics and progress gradually under guidance.
Participants are expected to have a reasonable level of fitness to carry equipment and navigate caves. Instructors will provide full training on movement, rope techniques, and safety procedures, so you can build confidence at a controlled pace.
The course fee covers all personal caving equipment, including a harness, vertical progression devices, helmet, lighting, and protective overalls. You will also have access to collective equipment such as ropes, carabiners, and backpacks.
Two qualified guides lead all sessions, and individual insurance is included for the duration of the course. The fee does not cover meals, drinks, or transfers to the meeting points.
Participants are advised to bring knee pads and gloves to increase comfort during caving sessions. Comfortable clothing suitable for physical activity and being underground is recommended.
You may also want to bring a small snack and water for breaks, though lunch is not provided. Sturdy footwear that can handle slippery and uneven surfaces is essential for safety.
The course involves moderate to challenging physical activity, including climbing, descending, and moving through confined spaces. Each day lasts approximately six hours, requiring endurance and strength.
Participants will carry backpacks with personal and shared equipment. You should be comfortable with exertion and able to navigate stairs, ladders, or uneven terrain safely.
Any medical conditions or physical limitations must be declared in advance when booking the course. This ensures instructors can plan activities safely and adapt techniques where necessary.
Participants with conditions that could be affected by underground activity may be asked to consult a doctor before attending. The safety of all participants is prioritised during every session.
Day 1 focuses on horizontal cavities to teach basic movement, navigation, and safety skills. Day 2 moves to exterior walls for vertical progression practice in a controlled outdoor environment.
Days 3 and 4 involve vertical cave systems with descents and ascents up to 100 metres. The final day’s route is adapted to the group’s overall ability, ensuring everyone gains experience while remaining safe.
Upon completion, you will have the knowledge and practical skills to explore caves safely with confidence. Instructors can advise on joining local caving clubs or continuing training to develop more advanced techniques.
The course is designed to give a solid foundation in both horizontal and vertical caving, ensuring participants can enjoy future adventures independently or with guidance in Mallorca or other regions.
The introductory caving course is split over four consecutive days, each focusing on different skills and cave types. The booking form will show only the first day of the course at the time of reservation.
After booking, the remaining dates for days two, three, and four will be sent to you. These are usually scheduled for the following days or shortly after the first session, depending on group availability and progression levels.
