This four-day small-group hiking tour combines two of Romania’s most varied mountain areas, with one day in the Bucegi Mountains and three days based in Piatra Craiului National Park. It’s an eco-certified itinerary focused on steady mountain walking, village life, and flexible route choices depending on weather and ability.
This itinerary is designed to show contrasting Carpathian landscapes without changing accommodation each night. A day in the quieter northern Bucegi Mountains is followed by three days exploring different sides of Piatra Craiului National Park, including villages, gorges, and higher alpine terrain.
Hiking days are paced to suit a wide range of abilities, with an optional challenging ascent to the park’s highest peak for those who want it. Routes may be adjusted based on weather conditions.
The tour is based in central Romania, starting and ending in Brașov. The Bucegi Mountains offer broad plateaus and open terrain, while Piatra Craiului National Park is defined by a narrow limestone ridge, deep gorges, and villages set directly beneath the mountains.
Staying in one village location allows you to experience the surrounding landscapes without constant packing and transfers.
This tour is suitable for active travellers with a reasonable level of fitness and some hiking experience. You should be comfortable walking for several hours on consecutive days over uneven terrain.
Waterproof hiking boots and suitable outdoor clothing are compulsory. The summit day involves sustained climbing and is only recommended for those who feel confident tackling a harder hike.
Accommodation is in a locally run guesthouse in the Bran–Măgura area, used for all three nights. Rooms are comfortable and practical, with a strong focus on local hospitality.
Meals are home-style and based on regional recipes, providing good recovery after full days on the trail.
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are compulsory. Bring waterproof outer layers, warm clothing, and comfortable hiking gear.
A daypack, refillable water bottle, sun protection, personal medication, and snacks are recommended.
This itinerary is Eco-Romania certified, reflecting long-term commitment to responsible tourism and low-impact travel in protected areas. Routes, accommodation, and suppliers are selected to support local communities.
The programme balances flexibility and structure, allowing guides to adapt routes to conditions while still delivering varied and rewarding hiking days.
After pick-up in Brașov, you’ll head towards the northern side of the Bucegi Mountains, starting near the Bran area. This side of the massif is quieter and more rural, with open views, forest sections, and steady ascents and descents.
Between June and September, the hike includes a stop at an authentic sheep farm for a simple local lunch. The day ends with a transfer to a village guesthouse in the Bran–Măgura area, where you’ll stay for the duration of the trip.
The first full day in Piatra Craiului National Park focuses on classic mountain trails and limestone scenery. Routes vary depending on conditions but typically involve forest paths, open ridges, and steady climbing.
You return to the same guesthouse in the evening, allowing time to recover and prepare for the following days without changing accommodation.
This day explores the lower slopes of the park, linking traditional villages at the base of the mountains with a walk through the Zărnești Gorges. The terrain is easier to moderate, making it a good contrast to the previous day.
The route combines village tracks, gorge paths, and woodland sections, offering insight into how local communities live alongside the national park.
On the final day, those with the fitness and motivation can attempt the ascent of the highest peak in Piatra Craiului National Park at 2,238 m. This is the most demanding hike of the trip, with a long ascent and descent.
For participants who prefer a less strenuous day, an alternative hike is offered at lower altitude. After the hike, you’ll return to Brașov by vehicle.
Most hiking days are moderate, with steady walking and manageable elevation gain. The final-day summit option is significantly harder and involves a long, sustained climb.
You can choose the alternative hike if you prefer to avoid the most demanding ascent.
