Taking the controls of a helicopter is an experience unlike any other, and this trial lesson gives you the opportunity to do exactly that under the guidance of a qualified flying instructor. Whether you're curious about learning to fly or simply want to experience something different, this lesson provides an enjoyable introduction to helicopter flying while allowing two guests to share the experience from the rear seats.
Beginning at Sherburn-in-Elmet, you'll meet your instructor for a detailed pre-flight briefing covering the helicopter, its controls and the principles of helicopter flight. This relaxed introduction explains how the aircraft responds to pilot inputs and gives you a chance to ask questions before heading outside to the waiting Robinson R44 helicopter.
After take-off, your instructor will demonstrate the helicopter's controls before inviting you to take control yourself during the flight. With guidance throughout the lesson, you'll experience the unique feeling of flying a helicopter while learning the basics of controlling the aircraft. Your instructor remains fully in command at all times, allowing you to build confidence while enjoying a safe and enjoyable introduction to flying.
One of the highlights of this experience is that two additional passengers can join you at no extra cost. They can watch your lesson from the rear seats, making this an excellent option for friends or family who would like to share the occasion. If you later decide to continue your training, the flight time completed during this lesson can count towards your helicopter pilot qualification.
Based in Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire, the airfield provides an excellent environment for helicopter training thanks to its quieter surroundings away from major commercial airports. This allows more time in the air and less time waiting on the ground.
Training flights operate from dedicated helicopter pads located immediately outside the briefing facilities, making the transition from classroom to cockpit quick and convenient. Spectators are also welcome to watch helicopters operating from the designated viewing area beside the helipad, subject to availability.
Participants should be in reasonable health before taking part. Anyone with epilepsy, vertigo or another condition that may affect flying should discuss this with the team before booking.
There is no minimum age, although anyone under 12 must be accompanied by a paying adult. If you're considering future pilot training or have any accessibility requirements, it's worth discussing these before your lesson.
Established in 1989, the team has trained helicopter pilots for more than three decades, with instructors collectively logging over 40,000 hours of helicopter instruction. Their experience allows complete beginners to enjoy flying while learning in a friendly and supportive environment.
Every lesson takes place in the Robinson R44, one of the most widely used training helicopters in the world. As a UK CAA-licensed training provider, the team follows professional standards throughout every stage of your experience, whether it's your first flight or the beginning of your aviation journey.

Many qualified helicopter pilots begin with a trial lesson to experience flying before deciding whether to continue with formal training.
Before flying, your instructor will explain the helicopter's controls, how the aircraft responds in the air and the basic principles of helicopter flight.
This briefing also covers safety procedures, boarding and what you'll experience during the lesson, helping you feel comfortable before take-off.
Although the flight lesson lasts around 30 minutes, it's recommended that you allow approximately 90 minutes for your visit.
This gives enough time for check-in, the pre-flight briefing, boarding the helicopter and receiving your certificate after the lesson.
