Follow the historic Monk Trail through Doi Suthep forest to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai's most revered hilltop temple at 1,100m. This 12 km round trip takes around three hours of walking with a temple visit, fruit snacks and hotel pickup included.
The shuttle from your hotel reaches the trailhead where the first 30-minute section leads to serene Wat Pha Lat, a hidden forest temple on the way up. Steady climbing through shaded jungle continues toward the golden chedi of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
You reach Wat Phra That Doi Suthep around 1pm for fruit snacks and time inside the famous golden chedi complex with panoramic views over Chiang Mai. Your guide shares stories of the Monk Trail's history and temple customs as you walk.

The Monk Trail winds through Doi Suthep National Park between Chiang Mai and the temple plateau. Ancient trees, bird calls and occasional monk sightings give this route a spiritual atmosphere distinct from the busy road up the mountain. Wat Pha Lat and Wat Doi Suthep bookend the hike with cultural highlights at both ends.
The hidden forest temple mid-trail is a peaceful surprise most road visitors never see. The temple complex at the summit is one of northern Thailand's most important pilgrimage sites, with golden chedi and views that justify every step of the climb.
Moderate fitness is enough for the steady uphill sections if you pace yourself on the forest trail. Good walking shoes with firm soles are essential on rooty paths that can be slippery after rain.
Children from 8 can join with a responsible adult. Teenagers from 13 are well suited to the full round trip. Dress modestly for temple visits with shoulders and knees covered, and bring water and a light snack for the climb.
