Itinerary
Day 1 begins with a 2-hour theory session covering essential safety principles for climbing equipped routes. You’ll learn about the types of fixed anchors used on Mallorca’s climbs, including how to identify reliable versus unreliable gear placements. The session also covers managing meeting materials, uses of double ropes, and introduction to basic partner rescue techniques.
After theory, you’ll head to suitable climbing routes featuring slabs and vertical tufas for practical application. The focus is on setting up secure meeting points and belays, practising safe rope management, and rehearsing rappelling techniques. The guide will demonstrate and supervise as you climb easier multi-pitch sections to build your confidence. The day will last approximately 7–8 hours, with breaks included.
Day 2 emphasises climbing as part of a rope team. You’ll pair up with another participant and practise leading, following, and belaying on multi-pitch routes. Workshops will be held on common errors such as anchor setup and rope handling to reinforce safety and efficiency. Throughout the day, you’ll continue practising safe rappelling, learn how to manage transitions between pitches, and develop problem-solving skills specific to multi-pitch climbs. The session concludes with a review and Q&A to consolidate your learning. This day also runs for around 7–8 hours.
Location
This course is held at various limestone climbing sites across Mallorca, known for their excellent quality rock and range of route types. The locations offer a blend of gently sloping slabs and vertical walls with tufas, ideal for beginners stepping into long-route climbing.
Approaches typically involve 15 to 30 minutes of walking through varied terrain, including forest paths and rocky tracks. The course is scheduled to avoid the hottest summer months, utilising shaded areas to ensure comfortable climbing conditions. Local guides use their knowledge to select the best spots depending on weather and group ability.
Prerequisites
Participants should have basic sport climbing experience, including secure belaying and climbing at beginner grades (III–V). Comfort with moving on vertical or moderately steep terrain is essential to fully benefit from the course.
A reasonable level of fitness is required to carry gear and hike to the climbing sites. Suitable approach footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are necessary, as sessions take place outdoors in variable conditions.
