This expedition links Pakistan's capital with the heart of Gilgit-Baltistan over twelve days. You fly or drive north to Gilgit, follow the Karakorum Highway through Nagar and Gojal, and weave in full trekking days to Rakaposhi and Nanga Parbat base camps with cultural stops at forts, lakes and ancient villages.
Driving days use comfortable vehicles on paved and mountain roads; trekking days include forest paths, moraine and glacier viewpoints with camp support at Hapakun, Rakaposhi base camp and Fairy Meadows. Domestic flights between Islamabad and Gilgit are part of the plan when airlines operate your departure.
Evenings range from hotel dining in Karimabad to campfire meals below seven thousand meter walls. The schedule builds altitude gradually and leaves room for photography, optional viewpoint walks, and homestay style dinners when the route includes them.
Your guides were raised in these mountains and lead the same paths year after year, with emphasis on safe pacing, morning briefings, and respectful contact with host communities rather than rushing between photo stops.
One team handles Islamabad pickup, internal flights or road transfers, camp kitchens, and hotel bookings so you have a single point of contact if weather or flight schedules shift. Guests often describe the mix of glacier trekking and valley culture as the highlight of a longer Pakistan holiday.
Your adventure begins with pickup at Islamabad International Airport or your hotel in Islamabad on day one. Share your flight number and arrival time in advance so the team can meet you at the terminal or coordinate a hotel collection at a sensible time after landing.
Islamabad is well connected by road from Rawalpindi and has regular domestic flights to Gilgit on the northern leg of the trip. If you arrive early, keep the first day flexible for a short city orientation depending on flight timing; departure on the final day is timed around your international flight from Islamabad.
You should be able to hike most days for four to six hours on mountain paths with some steep sections, especially on base camp treks to Rakaposhi and Nanga Parbat. Regular walking or weekend hill training in the months before you travel will make the trip more enjoyable.
The itinerary includes restful driving days between harder treks, and guides set a steady pace with breaks for water and photos. If you are unsure about fitness, ask the team before you travel and they can suggest preparatory walks.
The highest walking points are base camp areas and viewpoints above three thousand meters, with Fairy Meadows and Beyal Camp giving memorable views toward eight thousand meter peaks. The schedule moves north by air and road before the longer treks so your body has time to adjust.
Guides watch for signs of altitude discomfort and may shorten a viewpoint walk if needed. Drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol on trekking days, and tell your guide promptly if you feel unwell.
The planned route includes the flight from Islamabad to Gilgit on the northern sector when operations allow. Mountain weather can occasionally delay flights, so the team keeps a flexible mindset and may adjust the order of sightseeing if the airline reschedules.
You will receive practical advice on baggage limits and check in times closer to departure. Keep a buffer in your international travel plans when possible during the monsoon or winter shoulder seasons.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included on most days according to the running itinerary, mixing hotel buffets, roadside lunches, and camp meals on trek nights. You will also have opportunities to dine with local families for homemade dishes that reflect Hunza and Gilgit cuisine.
Let the team know about allergies or dietary needs when you confirm details. Vegetarian options are usually available if requested in advance.
The crew provides tents and cooking equipment on camp nights at Rakaposhi and Fairy Meadows. You should bring a warm sleeping bag rated for cool mountain nights, a sleeping mat if you prefer your own, and a daypack for water and layers on the trail.
Waterproof bags for clothing and sturdy boots are essential. Rental of some items may be possible locally; ask before you fly if you want to travel light.
The minimum age is ten years, and children must travel with a responsible adult who knows their limits on long walking days. Family groups are welcome when everyone understands that camp nights and flight delays can be demanding for younger hikers.
Guides can suggest shorter variants near camp on some afternoons if a child needs rest. Safety always comes first on glacier viewpoints and suspension bridge visits.
Bring modest comfortable clothing for villages, forts, and bazaars, plus a light cover up for cooler evenings in Karimabad. Sunglasses, sun hat, and a small day bag work well for city touring in Islamabad on arrival or departure.
Photography is encouraged at heritage sites; respect local customs when photographing people and ask permission when in doubt. A power bank helps on long driving days.
Groups run up to fifteen guests, which keeps camp logistics manageable while allowing a social atmosphere on the trail. You travel with a lead guide and support drivers and porters on trekking sections as needed.
Solo travelers are welcome and often join open departures. The team will introduce everyone at the first briefing in Islamabad.
Mountain weather can bring cloud, wind, or rain that makes a viewpoint walk less safe; guides may switch to a lower trail or extra cultural time in town. Domestic flights to Gilgit are especially weather sensitive, so patience and flexibility help.
The team will keep you informed and prioritise safety over ticking every viewpoint in poor visibility. Alternative sightseeing along the Karakorum Highway is often still possible when high trails are wet.
A valid passport with adequate validity is required, along with any visa or entry permission your nationality needs for Pakistan. Carry printed and digital copies of passport and insurance details for domestic flights and hotel check in.
Share arrival and departure flight information with the team so Islamabad pickup and final drop off align with your schedule. The team may request passport details in advance to arrange permits or flight manifests.
