The UAE turns two contrasting worlds — the warm Arabian Gulf and the vast desert — into slick, year-round adventure, most of it within easy reach of Dubai. It is a place where you can dive a coral reef in the morning and carve across dunes at sunset.
Under the water
Scuba diving is by far the most popular activity, with snorkelling and freediving alongside it. The east-coast emirate of Fujairah, on the Gulf of Oman, is the diving hub — warm, clear water and easy reef access make it ideal for first try-dives and certification courses alike.
On the water
Back on the Gulf coast, powerboating, sailing and jet skiing make the most of the calm, warm sea and the spectacular Dubai skyline.
Into the desert
Inland, 4x4 desert off-road tackles the towering red dunes, a thrilling contrast to the coast and one of the region's signature experiences.
Where to base yourself
Dubai is the busiest base for the full range of water and desert adventure, Fujairah on the east coast is the diving hub, and Abu Dhabi adds coast, desert and space to explore.
