Personal Paddling Skills

• Efficient Forward Paddling: Consistent, sustainable stroke technique for covering distance in moderate sea conditions, including headwinds and swell.
• Manoeuvring: Controlled use of edging, sweep strokes, draw strokes and stern rudders to navigate close to features such as cliffs or rock gardens.
• Support Strokes and Bracing: High and low braces to maintain stability in choppy water or when caught off balance.
• Rolling (if applicable): While not mandatory, a reliable roll is encouraged for paddlers operating in dynamic conditions.

Rescues and Safety

• Deep Water Rescues: T-rescues, scoop rescues and self-rescues with paddle float or re-entry and roll techniques.
• Assisting Others: Supporting tired or injured paddlers and understanding group dynamics on the water.
• Emergency Procedures: Use of towlines, signalling devices and VHF radio (where applicable).

Planning and Navigation

• Weather and Sea State: Interpreting forecasts, recognising local effects and applying knowledge to route planning.
• Tidal Planning: Calculating tidal streams, using tidal diamonds or tidal atlases, and understanding the impact on your journey.
• Chart and Map Work: Basic navigation skills using OS maps and marine charts, including bearings and transits.

Environmental Awareness and Seamanship

• Leave No Trace: Minimising your impact on marine wildlife and sensitive coastal environments.
• Understanding Hazards: Identifying overfalls, surf zones, headlands and other coastal features that affect safety and navigation.
• Boat and Kit Knowledge: Understanding your sea kayak’s features, loading for a journey, and effective clothing choices for cold water immersion.

The Sea Kayak Award is flexible and experience-led. While it is assessed, the focus is on real-world paddling and decision-making rather than rigid performance criteria. You’ll be encouraged to demonstrate your ability in context, during a journey that reflects typical coastal conditions. The Sea Kayak Award demonstrates that you have the personal paddling, planning and safety skills to undertake journeys on the sea in moderate conditions—defined by Paddle UK as winds up to force 4, sea state up to 3, and up to 2 knots of tidal flow. You’ll be seen as a competent and independent sea kayaker, capable of making sound decisions in dynamic environments. This award is often used as a stepping stone toward leadership roles, such as the Sea Kayak Leader Award, or for joining more advanced coaching and expedition programmes.

Many clubs and guiding organisations will recognise this award as evidence of your competence to paddle in peer-led groups or to hire sea kayaks for independent use. It’s also a great confidence booster for planning your own trips along the UK coast or further afield. • You should have experience paddling a sea kayak in a range of coastal conditions.
• You’ll need to be confident performing basic rescues and self-rescues.
• You should be able to paddle for several hours over a journey and manage your own equipment.
• A solid understanding of weather, tides and navigation is expected.
• No formal qualifications are required, but many paddlers take the Coastal Sea Kayak Award or equivalent training first.
• Participants typically need to be at least 16 years old (check with provider).

Most providers run this as a 1–2 day programme, depending on your prior experience. Some centres may offer a day of coaching followed by assessment, while others embed assessment throughout a longer sea journey. Expect full days on the water and on the beach, including planning and debrief time.

The Sea Kayak Award from Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) is assessed through continuous observation during a coached session or journey. There's no formal exam—instead, your assessor will guide and support you as you demonstrate the required skills in real-world conditions. You'll need to show confidence in planning and paddling a coastal journey, managing personal safety, and responding to changing conditions. The assessment typically takes place over a day, often as part of a sea kayaking trip. Depending on the provider, you may receive informal feedback throughout the day, followed by a final debrief.
