Safety Boat is the course sailing clubs quietly depend on. You already hold Powerboat Level 2. Now you learn to recover capsized dinghies, collect windsurfers and coordinate with race officers without becoming the incident yourself.
You need a basic understanding of how sailing dinghies and windsurfers behave, because you cannot rescue what you do not recognise. The work is unglamorous, wet and essential. Two days on the water mix slow periods with sudden bursts of activity, much like a real club Sunday.
Most clubs expect this certificate before you drive safety cover on junior or regatta days. That is normal, not a bureaucratic whim. Wear the kill cord. Instructors mention it until it becomes reflex, then watch you enforce it on busy race courses.
Safety Boat is continuously assessed by your RYA instructor on the water across both days.
There is no written exam. Weak handling near capsized juniors ends the assessment faster than any theory gap.
