BORDA Basic Level is where most fleet drivers and private 4x4 owners should start before pointing a Land Rover at a muddy hill. The British Off Road Driving Association trains you to use transmission systems properly and drive with discipline on mild off-highway terrain, not just hope the diff lock sorts it out.
This is the HSE-endorsed standard under PUWER 1998 for operators who regularly use all-wheel-drive vehicles on grass, gravel, mud, snow or ice where slopes stay around fifteen degrees and you still have a sensible run-out if something slides. Your BORDA Specialist Trainer sits in the front passenger seat throughout. That is intentional, not babysitting.
Most centres run Basic as a half-day with two trainees per vehicle, or a full day with up to four sharing one instructor between two vehicles. You cover syllabus units one to seven plus anything your training needs analysis flags up. Finish competent for mild conditions, not invincible on a forty-degree hillside. That is what BORDA Standard Level is for.
BORDA Basic is practical training with your BST in the passenger seat throughout. Assessment style depends on whether you aim for a Certificate of Training or Certificate of Proficiency.
