Hidden gems for summer 2026: 5 adventure destinations you might not have booked yet

29 June 2026 - 13 min read

Hiking trail through the Albanian Alps near Valbona

Looking for a summer adventure that is not the usual crowd?

Most summer searches still land on the same handful of European city breaks. These five are different: proper mountain or coast days, guides who handle permits and kit, and enough structure that you are not piecing the week together from forum posts.

We picked places that work in June to September, have live listings on adventuro, and still feel like a step off the main trail compared with Spain, France, and Italy.

How we chose these five

Every destination below had to pass three checks:

  1. Hidden-gem appeal: strong scenery and adventure without the usual summer crush.
  2. Bookable supply on adventuro: multi-day hikes, kayak expeditions, or similar trips you can reserve online.
  3. Summer timing: realistic for UK travellers in the peak window.
# Destination Best for Signature adventure
1 Romania Mountain hikers who want Carpathian drama without Alpine prices Carpathian trekking from Brașov
2 Albania Trail walkers after steep cols and simple guesthouses Valbona to Theth hiking
3 Morocco Fit hikers targeting a real summit Mount Toubkal trekking
4 Croatia Paddlers who want island hops on the Adriatic Sea kayak expeditions on the Dalmatian coast
5 Slovenia Improver SUP riders on alpine rivers White-water SUP and rafting

1. Romania: Carpathian hiking without the Camino crowds

Romania's Southern Carpathians are largely underrated, which is partly the point. The Via Transilvanica long-distance route runs more than 1,400km through Saxon villages, painted churches, and high forest. It is often compared with the Camino for atmosphere, but with far fewer walkers on any given week: closer to how the Camino felt a decade ago than how it feels in peak season now.

If you have walked the Tour du Mont Blanc and liked the hut-to-hut rhythm but not the price, the Carpathians are the sensible comparison: similar sense of big country, gentler on the wallet.

For a first trip, Brașov is the practical base. From there you are into Piatra Craiului (a sharp limestone ridge in its own national park) and the Bucegi massif, where marked paths lead past alpine meadows and the rock formations at Sphinx and Babele. More experienced hikers often look north to the Făgăraș ridge, Romania's highest range, for multi-day wild-camping routes; the four-day trip below is the better entry point if this is your first time in the Carpathians.

Best for: Improver hikers on marked trails; anyone who likes a bit of culture with their altitude.

When to go: June to September for warm hiking weather and open huts. July and August are busiest; book multi-day departures early.

2. Albania: the Albanian Alps on foot

The Accursed Mountains (Prokletije) along Albania's border with Montenegro are steep, rocky, and still relatively quiet by Alpine standards. The classic crossing is Valbona to Theth: a full day over the Valbona Pass (around 1,800m) on a well-used footpath, usually with a night in a simple guesthouse on either side. Most fit walkers allow 6 to 8 hours for the crossing itself, depending on heat and pack weight. The descent into Theth is harder on the knees than the climb out of Valbona, worth factoring in if your group mixes ages.

If the Dolomites feel crowded in August, this is the comparison most experienced hikers reach for: steeper in places, rougher underfoot, and still cheaper once flights are in.

Add Koman Lake on some itineraries and the trip changes character entirely. The ferry through the lake's narrow gorge is one of the Balkans' best boat journeys, and pairing it with hiking gives you two landscapes in one week. Direct flights from the UK to Tirana are typically around three hours.

Best for: Hikers who are happy on rocky paths and long days; anyone planning their first proper Balkans trek.

When to go: June to September. Late June and September are a shade quieter than August on the Valbona–Theth route.

3. Morocco: Atlas Mountains and Mount Toubkal

Mount Toubkal rises to 4,167m, the highest point in North Africa. Most guided ascents start from Imlil in the High Atlas, about 90 minutes from Marrakech, and use mountain refuges on the way up. Summit day is a long one: groups often set off before dawn from the highest hut to reach the top in the cooler morning hours, then descend to Imlil the same day or the next.

If you have done Mont Blanc or Mount Kenya and want a summit week without a month of logistics, Toubkal is the sensible comparison: a clear path, no technical climbing in summer, but real altitude and a proper summit day. It is not Kilimanjaro in scale, but it fits a standard UK holiday far more easily.

You do not need ropes or crampons in the summer season, but you do need stamina and respect for altitude. The path is clear and well trodden; the challenge is the height and the sun. Beyond Toubkal, the Atlas valleys around Imlil and Aroumd are worth the trip in their own right: terraced fields, Berber villages, and mule paths that e-bike tours now use as well.

Best for: Hikers who want a defined summit goal; groups mixing trekking with Marrakech time at either end.

When to go: May to October for Toubkal ascents. June to September is the core summer window. Avoid mid-winter unless you are equipped for snow and ice.

4. Croatia: Dalmatian islands by sea kayak

Croatia's Dalmatian coast has more than 1,000 islands, and a multi-day kayak trip is still one of the better ways to see them. You paddle between limestone coves, pull into harbour towns for dinner, and camp on remote beaches or stay in simple lodges depending on the itinerary. Adriatic water temperatures in summer are typically in the low to mid-20s °C, warm enough for long sessions in shorts and a rash vest.

If you have sailed the Greek islands but want to move under your own power, this is the comparison most paddlers reach for: shorter crossings than the Scottish west coast, warmer water than Cornwall, and harbour dinners at the end of the day instead of dehydrated rations.

The paddling is not exotic for its own sake: you are covering distance on open water, reading wind and ferry lanes, and landing where larger boats cannot. That is what makes it feel like a proper expedition rather than a beach holiday with paddles.

Best for: Paddlers building multi-day mileage · Couples and groups · Anyone who wants coast and villages without a hiking pack every day.

When to go: June to September. Sea conditions and water temperature are most reliable in July and August, when fixed departures fill first.

5. Slovenia: Julian Alps and emerald rivers

Slovenia packs an unusual amount into a small country. The Julian Alps, Lake Bled, and the Soča Valley are all within a few hours' drive of each other. The Soča runs an unmistakable blue-green colour, caused by limestone sediment in the water, and the valley is a centre for rafting, kayaking, and increasingly stand-up paddleboarding on moving water.

If you have rafted the Ardèche or Neretva and want alpine scenery with fewer August queues, the Soča is the comparison: grade II–III water, forested banks, and proper mountain backdrop. White-water SUP is the next step if you already paddle flat water and want something more committed than a lake session at Bled.

On adventuro, Slovenia is represented by one flagship multi-day SUP trip that crosses into northern Italy and includes Lake Bohinj (listed as Bojini on the trip page). Expect white-water paddleboarding on graded sections, rafting on faster water, and calmer sessions on mountain lakes. You need prior flat-water SUP experience; this is not a learn-to-paddle holiday.

Best for: Improver SUP riders · Multi-sport travellers · Anyone who wants alpine water without the Dolomites crowds.

When to go: June to September for workable river levels and comfortable air temperatures. Late-summer departures tend to book out first.

Do I need to be an expert?

No. Each section above states the typical level. Toubkal and the Albanian Alps demand fitness and stamina more than technical skill. When should I book for summer 2026?

For July and August treks (Romania, Albania, Morocco), Croatia kayak departures, and the Slovenia SUP trip, book as early as you can. Group sizes are limited and dates are fixed.

How does adventuro booking work?

Some listings are instant book; others are request-only. You choose dates, the centre confirms availability, then you pay. Read the cancellation terms on the listing before you commit.
