What is the RLSS?
The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) is a drowning-prevention charity and awarding body for water safety, lifesaving and lifeguard training. Its qualifications range from pool lifeguard awards through to the modular National Water Safety Management Programme (NWSMP), used by outdoor educators, coaches and employers who work near water.
RLSS certificates are recognised across the UK. The NWSMP builds in stages from water safety awareness through environment-specific modules (still water, river, coastal) to in-water rescue skills, so you can match training to the environments your role actually involves.

Choosing a course
Choose the NWSMP level and environment modules that fit your job. Level 1 suits awareness roles; river or coastal modules matter if you lead paddlesport or work on moving water. Pool lifeguard and beach lifeguard awards are separate RLSS pathways not always listed here. Leave a comment when you book if you need a specific module or employer-mandated combination.
NWSMP certificates are valid for two years and renew through refresher training. Compare centre dates, swim fitness requirements for higher levels and whether your employer wants RLSS specifically or accepts equivalent water safety awards.
