What is IKO?

The International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) is a global body for kitesurfing education, founded in 2001 to standardise safe teaching and rider progression. IKO-affiliated centres issue digital Kiteboarder cards from Level 1 (Discovery) through Level 4 (Advanced), so you and your instructor share a clear picture of what you can do independently.

IKO is widely used outside the UK, especially at holiday schools and international kite destinations. In Britain, the British Kitesurfing Association (BKSA) is the national governing body; many UK schools teach to BKSA standards, while others run IKO programmes or offer instructor equivalency for coaches who trained abroad.

IKO pathways

• Riders: Kiteboarder Levels 1 to 4, recorded on your IKO profile after lessons at an affiliated centre.
• Assistants and instructors: Assistant Training Course (ATC) then Instructor Training Course (ITC), each with online modules and in-person training at an IKO centre. Instructor Level 1 qualifies you to teach beginners; higher levels need logged teaching hours and further assessment.
• Equivalency: Instructors holding other national qualifications (including BKSA) may attend an IKO Instructor Equivalency Course (IEC) at some centres rather than starting from zero.

Choosing a course

Match the awarding body to where you will ride and hire kit. Mediterranean and tropical schools often issue IKO rider cards; UK coastal schools may prioritise BKSA. Ask whether lesson price includes IKO registration, equipment and insurance before you pay.

Instructor courses are demanding. IKO expects riding skill around Kiteboarder Level 4 before in-person ATC and ITC modules. Do not book an instructor week if you are still struggling to stay upwind in average conditions.
