What is the BHPA?
The British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) regulates free-flight sports in the UK. Pilot training follows a structured pathway from Elementary Pilot through Club Pilot, Pilot and Advanced Pilot, with hang gliding and paragliding syllabi tailored to each discipline.
Students train at BHPA-registered schools and progress onto club sites under coach supervision. The system emphasises gradual exposure to height and weather, with radio supervision and club membership supporting safe long-term flying in the UK.

Choosing a course
Elementary Pilot is the first formal rating after initial lessons, with low-level supervised flights. Club Pilot builds independence at registered club sites but does not allow unsupervised flying in new locations. Expect progression to depend on weather windows and personal readiness, not fixed calendar days.
BHPA training requires club membership and ongoing coach oversight. Compare school hill sites, paragliding versus hang gliding pathways, and whether kit hire is included. Leave a comment when you book if you are converting from another agency or returning after a break.
Official standards
Pilot ratings, school registration and site rules are published by the BHPA at bhpa.co.uk. Your registered school confirms the rating you will work towards and local flying limits when you book.
