Töv aimag wraps around the capital on three sides, and much of it is open grassland with herder families and white gers visible from the main roads west towards Kharkhorin. It is the soft edge between city and wilderness, where many operators run two- or three-night horse introductions before longer routes into Övörkhangay.
Herder families here often keep horses for tourist rides alongside their own herds. Ask your operator how many hours you will ride each day and whether you can walk beside the horse if you need a break. Summer thunderstorms can appear quickly, so a light rain shell is worth packing even when the morning looks clear.
Valleys west of the city fill with wildflowers in June, and herders move camps with the season. Evening meals are often mutton stew in a ger, with milk tea served in shallow bowls.
Steppe days near the capital
Guided horse riding and valley walks with ger camps and vehicle support. Töv pairs naturally with Ulaanbaatar on the same central loop.
