Tailevu runs along the eastern side of Viti Levu, from the banks of the Rewa River up the Kings Road towards Ra. Its main town is Nausori, and Nausori Airport, Suva's airport for domestic flights, sits close by. Off the coast lies Bau, a tiny island that was the power base of Ratu Seru Cakobau. Further north, the road passes Korovou and the dairy country on its way to Natovi Landing, where ferries leave for Ovalau and Vanua Levu. The Dawasamu coast, further along the Kings Road, has quiet bays and village lodges.
What to do in Tailevu
Moon Reef, a crescent of coral off the Dawasamu coast about 85 kilometres from Suva, is home to a pod of spinner dolphins that rests in its lagoon by day and heads out to feed at night. Boats from the lodges nearby reach it in about 15 minutes. You watch from the boat rather than swim with the dolphins, because the local community protects the reef, and there's snorkelling on the surrounding coral afterwards. Village lodges on this coast also run guided kayak trips up the Dawasamu river to Driti village. For many travellers, Tailevu is the road to Levuka, since the ferry from Natovi reaches Ovalau in around an hour and a half. It's the quiet northern end of Suva and southeast Viti Levu.
