Rewa is Fiji's smallest province by land area, and it holds the heart of the capital. Central Suva and its older suburbs fall within it, along with the low, fertile delta where the Rewa River meets the sea and the island of Beqa across the lagoon from Pacific Harbour. Lomanikoro village in the delta is the seat of the Roko Tui Dreketi, paramount chief of the Burebasaga confederacy. In town, the municipal market is piled with dalo, kava root and reef fish. The Fiji Museum sits in Thurston Gardens, a short walk from the waterfront.
What to do in Rewa
Beqa is the province's adventure island. The Sawau people of Beqa are Fiji's original firewalkers. Around the island, the reefs of Beqa Lagoon offer some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling on the south coast, with soft coral and a few wrecks. Most dive boats and island transfers leave from Pacific Harbour. Back on the mainland, a morning in Suva works well before a flight. Walk the seawall, see the canoes and war clubs in the Fiji Museum, and pick up a bundle of yaqona at the market for your first village visit. Suva is also the hub for the rest of Suva and southeast Viti Levu, from the forest at Colo-i-Suva to the river gorges of Namosi.
