Orkhon aimag is dominated by Erdenet, a copper-mining city with shops, fuel and Soviet-era apartment blocks. It sits on the main road west from Darkhan towards Bulgan and Arkhangai, so convoys often stop for supplies before turning north to Khövsgöl or south towards Karakorum.
Erdenet's market is useful for restocking fruit, bread and bottled water before multi-day legs. Mining traffic can slow the approach road at shift changes, so plan shopping time with your driver.
Copper trucks share the highway with tourist jeeps, and the open-cut mine dominates the skyline south of Erdenet. The town is a practical place to repair a tyre or buy fruit before remote legs.
Local buses link Erdenet with Darkhan, but tourist groups rely on private jeeps with roof racks for luggage. The copper mine viewpoint is a short detour if your driver has time before closing.
