Namosi is one of Fiji's smallest provinces by population, with fewer than 8,000 people living in the mountains west of Suva. It's a landscape of steep, forested ridges cut by fast rivers and deep gorges. Villages sit in the valleys, with gardens of dalo and cassava on the slopes above them. Part of the coastal town of Navua also falls inside the province.
What to do in Namosi
The Wainikoroiluva, known locally as the Luva, is the river most visitors see. Trips begin with a sevusevu at Nakavika village, then you walk down to the water and paddle inflatable kayaks through easy rapids between rock walls and waterfalls. Downstream at Namuamua, where the Luva meets the Navua, a motorised longboat carries you on through the canyon towards the coast. Community-run day trips in the highlands add a short hike to a waterfall pool, bamboo rafting on the river and a lovo lunch cooked in an earth oven. Most trips collect you from Suva or Pacific Harbour, so Namosi works as a day out within Suva and southeast Viti Levu.
