Lomaiviti is a group of islands in the Koro Sea, east of Viti Levu. Ovalau, the main island, is a steep, green volcanic remnant with the town of Levuka squeezed between the hills and the sea. Levuka was Fiji's first colonial capital, and its old port town is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. At Nasova, on the edge of town, Fijian chiefs signed the Deed of Cession that made Fiji a British colony. Further out, Gau and Koro are larger islands with villages and fewer visitors.
What to do in Lomaiviti
Levuka rewards a slow day on foot. Walk Beach Street past the old shopfronts, climb the 199 steps up Mission Hill for the view over the harbour, then join a guided hike inland to Lovoni, a village inside Ovalau's old volcanic crater. Near Ovalau, the small coral island of Leleuvia has snorkelling straight off the beach and steady trade winds that draw kitesurfers in season. Liveaboards bring scuba divers to the quieter reefs around Wakaya and Gau, and manta rays are sometimes seen off Wakaya. Lomaiviti is the part of the Outer islands you can reach by bus and ferry from Suva.
