Kadavu is Fiji's fourth-largest island, lying about 88 kilometres south of Suva. It's long and deeply indented by bays, and in places it narrows to a few hundred metres across. Roads are few, so most travel is by small boat between its villages and the lodges tucked into its coves. Vunisea, near the middle, has the airstrip, the hospital and a few shops. At the western end, the volcano Nabukelevu rises above the coast. The forests hold birds found nowhere else, including the Kadavu fantail and the crimson shining parrot.
What to do in Kadavu
The Great Astrolabe Reef is the draw. It wraps around the south and east of the island and curves away north around Ono, with walls, deep channels and coral gardens that see few divers. Guided scuba dives run through Naiqoro Passage, a protected channel where divers pay an entry fee. Near Buliya, a channel known for manta rays is visited on guided snorkel trips when conditions line up. Calm bays suit sea kayaking between villages, with a sevusevu when you stop ashore. Kadavu is the easiest island group to reach within the Outer islands.
