Kasane is a small, easy-going town on the south bank of the Chobe River, close to where four countries almost meet. Namibia's Impalila Island lies across the water, and the floodplains of Chobe National Park begin at the edge of town. A few kilometres east at Kazungula, a curved bridge carries the road over the Zambezi into Zambia, and a second road runs about 70 kilometres to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Elephants sometimes wander through town at dusk.
The riverfront drive heads west from the park gate near town, past Ihaha and Serondela. Buffalo and elephant graze the floodplain here beside puku, an antelope you'll rarely see elsewhere in Botswana. In the dry season, roughly May to October, the inland pans dry up and the river becomes the main source of water, so the herds are at their biggest then. Afternoon boat trips idle along the channels around Sedudu Island, where you may watch elephants swim across, though numbers depend on the month and the time of day. The green season, roughly November to April, is quieter, with calving antelope and migrant birds. Deep in the park to the south, Savuti sits on the Savute Channel, which flows and dries in long cycles, and its lion and elephant sightings follow the water.
