Cakaudrove covers the southeastern third of Vanua Levu, along with Taveuni and the smaller islands of Rabi and Kioa. Savusavu, its only large town, curves around a deep bay where cruising yachts anchor. Along the seafront, hot springs steam at temperatures high enough for locals to cook in them. Across the Somosomo Strait, Taveuni rises steeply into cloud forest, and the 180° meridian runs across the island. Somosomo village, on Taveuni's west coast, is the seat of the Tui Cakau, paramount chief of the Tovata confederacy.
What to do in Cakaudrove
The Rainbow Reef runs along the Somosomo Strait, where tidal currents feed soft corals that open up in colour when the water moves. The Great White Wall, covered in pale soft coral, is its best-known site for scuba diving, and boats reach it from both Taveuni and the Vanua Levu shore. On Taveuni, the Bouma National Heritage Park has the three Tavoro waterfalls and the Lavena coastal walk to Wainibau falls. A tougher guided hike climbs to Lake Tagimaucia, a crater lake where the red-and-white tagimaucia flower grows. Around Savusavu, calm bays and fringing reefs are good for snorkelling between dives. Cakaudrove is the heart of Vanua Levu and Taveuni.
