Do I need to be able to skateboard?

It helps, but it is not essential. The pumping motion is different to normal skating, and beginners pick it up with a little coaching.

As with any board sport on hard ground, pads and a helmet are sensible. Start on smooth, quiet tarmac and build up.

How does it help my surfing?

It trains the same carving and pumping motion and timing as surfing, so you can keep the feeling sharp away from the water.

A helmet and knee, elbow and wrist pads, plus trainers with grip. Falls happen while you learn.

How fit do I need to be?

Not very. It is about balance and rhythm more than fitness, though pumping for a while is a surprisingly good workout.

Surf Skate in Noroeste (North-West)

A surfskate is a skateboard with a special front truck that pivots and springs, so you can pump it along and carve hard turns without pushing, much like riding a wave. Surfers use them to train their turns and timing on dry land, and plenty of people ride them simply because they are good fun.

If you can skateboard you will adapt quickly, and even total beginners get the pumping motion with a bit of practice, ideally with pads on. It is a brilliant way to keep the surfing feeling alive between trips to the coast.

The coaches on adventuro can introduce you to surfskating and the technique behind it. Helmet and pads on, and treat the pavement with a bit of respect while you find your flow.
