Helicopter flying feels unlike anything else in the sky. You lift straight up, hold a hover inches above the ground and pick a landing spot the size of a tennis court. A trial lesson is the usual way in: you sit up front, the instructor handles the delicate bits at first, and you get real stick time as soon as you are stable.

Training follows the UK PPL(H) route — Private Pilot Licence (helicopter). Expect a CAA Class 1 or 2 medical, ground-school exams and roughly 45 hours minimum (many students need 55–70 hours in practice). Along the way you learn hover control, autorotation emergencies, navigation and the weather judgement that keeps rotor flying safe.

Beyond the licence, helicopters open scenic flights, mountain flying, utility work and hour-building with experienced instructors. It is one of the more demanding and rewarding ways to fly — higher cost than fixed-wing, but the capability is unmatched.
