La Paz and the high Andes are Bolivia's dramatic heart — a capital spilling down a canyon at 3,600 m, ringed by the glaciated wall of the Cordillera Real, with the sacred Lake Titicaca to the west. This is high-altitude adventure at its most accessible and most extreme, where a 6,000 m summit, a legendary mountain-bike descent and an ancient island shrine all sit within a day of the city.
