This private full-day hike explores a little-visited section of the Tăgă Mountains, an isolated area close to Piatra Craiului National Park. Designed for experienced hikers and keen photographers, the route focuses on big viewpoints, seasonal wildlife signs, and quiet forest landscapes far from marked trails.
This hike targets remote forest roads and open meadows in the Tăgă Mountains, an area rarely visited by casual hikers. The route is unmarked and varies slightly depending on conditions, prioritising the best viewpoints and seasonal photographic opportunities.
The focus is on landscape photography and reading the environment, with time allowed for stops, framing shots, and observing wildlife signs, particularly in winter when tracks are visible in snow.
The Tăgă Mountains lie on the edge of the Burzenland region, a historic area of southeastern Transylvania shaped by Romanian, Saxon, and Hungarian communities. This area sits between several major Carpathian massifs, making it an excellent natural viewpoint across southern Romania.
Unlike busier national park trails, this landscape remains largely undeveloped, with long forest roads, open grazing land, and minimal infrastructure. The lack of marked paths contributes to its quiet, remote feel.
This hike is best suited to confident walkers with good fitness who are comfortable covering long distances over a full day. The route includes steady ascents, uneven ground, and extended time on foot.
It is not suitable for people with back problems, heart conditions, or for those who are pregnant. Participants should be comfortable hiking in colder conditions, particularly between October and April.
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are compulsory. Warm, layered clothing is essential, especially outside the summer months, as weather can change quickly.
Bring a daypack, water, snacks or lunch, camera equipment, spare gloves, and sun or weather protection depending on conditions.
Routes are designed for depth rather than volume, focusing on quieter areas and seasonal conditions rather than fixed trails. This approach allows for flexible pacing, better photography opportunities, and a stronger connection to the landscape.
Experience is shaped by long-term knowledge of the region, with an emphasis on responsible access, minimal impact, and understanding how weather, wildlife, and terrain interact throughout the year.
You’ll begin with a transfer from Brașov to Zărnești, followed by a short drive to the trailhead near the national park boundary. From here, the hike follows unmarked forest roads and paths through deep woodland before opening out into high meadows.
Throughout the day, you’ll gain elevated viewpoints overlooking the Southern Carpathians, including the Piatra Craiului ridge, Bucegi Massif, Făgăraș Mountains, Baiului Mountains, and Postăvarul and Piatra Mare massifs. In winter, the guide will help identify animal tracks such as bear, wolf, deer, and wild boar. The route and pace are adjusted based on weather, light conditions, and group ability before returning to Brașov in the evening.
Yes, you don’t need to be a professional photographer to enjoy this trip. The focus is on being in the right places at the right time, with plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos.
That said, the day is still a full hiking experience, so you should be comfortable walking long distances regardless of your photography experience.
The route uses unmarked forest roads, woodland paths, and open meadows. Terrain can be uneven, muddy, or snowy depending on conditions.
Because the paths are not signposted, the guide leads throughout, adjusting the route to suit the group and weather.
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. However, during winter months it is common to see tracks and signs of animals such as bear, wolf, deer, and wild boar.
Learning how to identify these signs is a key part of the experience.
Routes may be adjusted or shortened depending on weather conditions to ensure safety. The experience still runs in winter, but flexibility is essential.
If conditions are unsafe, the guide will adapt the plan rather than cancel at short notice.
Warm clothing and waterproof boots are essential. Depending on snow and ice conditions, additional equipment may be recommended in advance.
You’ll be advised ahead of time if anything extra is required.
Lunch is not included as standard. You can bring your own food or request a picnic lunch for an additional fee.
The guide will advise on suitable stops during the day.
This is a private tour, run exclusively for your group. A minimum of two participants is required, and solo bookings are charged at the two-person rate.
This allows for flexible pacing and a more tailored day.
The day starts in Brașov, with either a central meeting point or arranged pick-up. From there, you’ll travel by vehicle to the hiking area near Zărnești.
Exact timings are confirmed after booking.
The minimum age is 12. This hike is best suited to older teenagers who are fit and comfortable with long walking days.
Younger children are unlikely to enjoy the length and conditions of the route.
Bookings close one day before departure, subject to availability.
Trips run between October and April with guaranteed departures during this period.
