🥾 What to Expect

Meet in Nagoya and travel privately towards the Kiso Valley. Start with a museum visit that introduces the Nakasendo through the work of Utagawa Hiroshige, then continue to Tsumago, where wooden inns and merchant houses evoke the road's Edo-period past.

Set out on the walking route with your guide, carrying your packed lunch through cypress groves, small clearings and past waterfalls. Original stone sections, old waymarkers and a traditional teahouse make the distance feel full of small discoveries rather than simply a transfer between towns.

Arrive in Magome, a hillside post town with waterwheels, traditional buildings and open views. There is time to wander before the private return journey towards Nagoya or an agreed Kiso Valley finish.

🌿 Location

The Nakasendo once connected Edo with Kyoto through the mountains, and this Tsumago to Magome section remains one of its most evocative surviving stretches. The route moves through a lived-in rural landscape rather than a museum setting, which is part of its charm.

The Kiso Valley's forested slopes and preserved townscapes create a slower rhythm than the big cities. On foot, you can see how the road links villages, water, farms and mountain passes in a way that is easy to miss from a vehicle.

🧭 Prerequisites

You should be comfortable completing an 8 km walk on uneven terrain with occasional climbs and descents. Sturdy shoes, layers and a small daypack for water and lunch are essential for a comfortable day.

No technical hiking skills are required, but this is not a flat urban stroll. If mobility, stamina or weather are a concern, discuss the non-hiking alternative available for the private itinerary before the day begins.

✨ Why Choose Us

A private guide makes the old road more legible, helping you notice the details that tell its story while giving your group room to move at a natural pace. Practical transport and route planning are handled so you can concentrate on the towns and landscape.

The day has both cultural depth and a satisfying outdoor rhythm, from printmaking traditions to forest paths and a final village wander. It is a thoughtful way to experience a remarkable historic route without treating it as a rushed checklist.
