You climb Wagagai Peak on Mount Elgon using the steep Sasa Trail, East Africa's oldest volcanic massif, with nights under canvas and a hotel reset in Mbale. Six days give acclimatisation time without the crowds of higher-profile summits.
Day one is the road transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Mbale, hotel check-in, an equipment check and a climb briefing with your mountain guide and porter team. You'll sort kit, meet the people who will carry camp life up the trail, and sleep in a proper bed before the mountain.
Days two to four follow the Sasa Trail from Budadiri through montane forest and giant-lobelia moorland to established camps. Summit day is a pre-dawn start from high camp for Wagagai Peak at 4321 metres, then descent; the next day walks down to the trailhead. Porters carry tents and your main bag while you hike with a daypack.
Day five returns to Mbale for a hotel night, hot shower and dinner; day six drives back to Entebbe or Kampala. Meals on the mountain are cooked by the camp crew, including a packed breakfast for summit morning. Your guide sets daily pace, rest stops and turnaround times based on weather and the group.
Mount Elgon straddles Uganda and Kenya with giant lobelias, caves and wide caldera views unlike equatorial forest parks. The Sasa Trail is the shortest but steepest line to Wagagai.
Mbale town at the mountain foot offers supply stops and a comfortable hotel before and after the climb. Sugar cane valleys and village markets line the approach road from Kampala.
Minimum age eighteen and previous high-altitude hiking experience recommended. Summit day can take eight to ten hours round trip from high camp with cold pre-dawn starts.
You need a four-season sleeping bag, warm layers and headtorch for summit night. Travel insurance must cover high-altitude trekking and evacuation.
Professional mountain guides trained in altitude safety lead the team alongside fair-wage porters who carry camping equipment. Permits and park fees are bundled so trailhead paperwork is ready on arrival.
We choose Elgon for climbers who want volcanic scenery and solitude instead of congested routes elsewhere. Pre-climb briefing in Mbale covers pacing, hydration and what to expect at each camp.
We meet you at Entebbe International Airport on arrival or arrange a flexible pick-up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Share flight numbers and any jet-lag rest needs so the first transfer is timed sensibly.
On the final day we drop you back to Entebbe International Airport or your Kampala hotel unless your itinerary uses another gateway, which we confirm in writing before you travel.
Before and after the climb you stay at Le Cottage Mbale or similar mid-range hotel with en-suite rooms, hot showers and mountain views from the balcony. On the mountain you camp in expedition tents with sleeping mats provided while porters pitch camp near water sources.
Evenings on the trail feature hot meals in a dining tent and early bedtimes before summit night. Hotel nights bookend the trek so you can store city clothes and charge batteries before returning to canvas.
Request your preferred travel window through the booking form and we reply with availability for the Mount Elgon climb. Private departures are built around your party size, so sharing rough arrival dates and any fixed leave days helps us shape the route.
Once dates align we send a clear outline of deposits, permit timing and what happens next. Gorilla and cross-border products need early confirmation because permits and lodge space are limited.
Most circuits begin with a meet and greet at Entebbe International Airport or a flexible pick-up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. We coordinate flight times so you are not waiting unnecessarily after a long journey.
Drop-off is normally back to Entebbe or Kampala on the final day unless your itinerary notes a different gateway. Tell us if you need a late flight buffer or an extra hotel night on arrival.
Your fee covers the core logistics described on this listing: private transport in a suitable 4x4, guiding, park fees where stated, meals and accommodation on multi-day routes, and activity permits that the product name promises.
International flights, visas, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, personal shopping and discretionary tips are not included. We can outline typical visa and insurance expectations when you enquire.
Expect a mix of vehicle time and time on your feet. Walking safaris and treks use moderate pacing with rest stops, while summit days are longer and steadier.
Share any knee, heart or altitude concerns when you book so guides can choose realistic routes and suggest porter support where available. Hydration and broken-in footwear matter more than gym credentials.
Neutral-toned clothing, a sun hat, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle are daily essentials. Sturdy boots with grip matter on forest treks and volcano slopes.
Rain gear travels with you even in dry seasons. For gorilla treks add long sleeves, gardening gloves and a small daypack; for camping or mountain nights add warm layers and a headtorch.
Multi-day packages include the meals listed in the day-by-day plan, usually full board or breakfast and lunch depending on the final travel day.
Lodges and camp chefs can often accommodate common dietary requests when we know in advance. Mention allergies or vegetarian and vegan needs at booking so kitchens can prepare.
Uganda Wildlife Authority rules govern gorilla and chimp encounters, including minimum ages, one hour with habituated gorilla families and briefing times you must respect.
We secure permits on your behalf when they are part of the package and explain briefing points the evening before each trek. Flash photography and touching wildlife are never permitted.
These itineraries are priced as private expeditions for your party rather than joining a large scheduled coach group.
That keeps vehicle space, lodge rooms and guide attention aligned with your pace. If you are a solo traveller we still run the itinerary and confirm any single-room arrangements when quoting.
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for treks and multi-day safaris and should cover medical evacuation where you walk in remote terrain.
Most visitors need a Uganda visa applied online before travel; cross-border itineraries may need an East African tourist visa. We remind you of current entry steps after booking but you remain responsible for passport validity.
Standard terms follow the tiered policy on your confirmation: longer notice generally allows more refund flexibility, while late changes may forfeit deposits.
Permits, park fees, lodges and flights we purchase for you are often non-refundable once issued. We explain which costs are locked at each milestone before you pay the balance.
