Take on the classic Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge with expert guidance across Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough. This full-day hike covers nearly 25 miles and is designed for experienced walkers aiming to complete the route within 12 hours.
The day starts early with a 6:15am meeting at Horton in Ribblesdale, a small village known as the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. After a safety briefing and kit check, the group sets off on the first climb to Pen-y-Ghent, which rises to 694 metres. This initial ascent warms up the legs and offers sweeping views of the surrounding dales and moorlands. After descending, walkers continue across varied terrain towards the second peak, Whernside, the highest of the three at 736 metres.
Following Whernside, the route takes you through open moorland and valleys to reach Ingleborough, the final summit at 724 metres. The aim is to complete the full circuit within 12 hours, requiring steady pacing and efficient breaks. Along the way, your guide will provide navigation support, advice on pacing, and share insights into local geography and history. The route is challenging due to its length and elevation gain, so participants should be prepared for a long, demanding day outdoors.
This challenge takes place in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in northern England. Horton in Ribblesdale, the meeting point, lies within the scenic valley of the Ribble, surrounded by limestone hills, caves, and rolling moorlands that characterise the region.
The three peaks themselves—Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough—are iconic landmarks of the Dales, each offering distinct landscapes and walking conditions. The area is well known for its limestone pavements, deep valleys, and wildlife, attracting walkers and outdoor enthusiasts from across the UK and beyond.
Participants should be physically fit and used to long days of walking over uneven and sometimes steep terrain. The Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge requires stamina and endurance to cover nearly 25 miles within 12 hours, so prior experience with similar long-distance hikes is highly recommended.
All participants must be at least 18 years old. Proper walking boots, waterproof clothing, and sufficient food and water are essential. The guide will advise on suitable equipment beforehand to ensure everyone is prepared for variable weather and challenging conditions.
The team consists of qualified and experienced Mountain Leaders with strong backgrounds in UK hillwalking and mountain safety. Each leader is insured and trained in outdoor First Aid, offering participants expert guidance and support throughout the challenge.
Drawing on many years of experience in mountainous environments, the guides provide a friendly and professional service focused on safety, education, and enjoyment. Whether you are tackling the Yorkshire 3 Peaks for the first time or aiming to improve your personal best, this challenge is delivered with careful planning and genuine passion for the outdoors.
The Yorkshire 3 Peaks is a demanding walk covering nearly 25 miles with significant elevation gain across three separate summits. Completing the route within 12 hours requires good fitness, endurance, and experience walking over uneven, often rocky terrain. The length and continuous nature of the walk make it more challenging than most single-peak hikes in the UK.
It is important that participants train beforehand with long walks and some hill training if possible. The challenge pushes both physical stamina and mental focus, especially in the later stages when fatigue sets in. Proper preparation and pacing are essential for a successful day.
The route covers a mix of well-defined paths, open moorland, grassy slopes, and some rocky sections, particularly near the summits. There are steep ascents and descents between the peaks, and in some places, loose stones or uneven ground require careful footing.
Weather conditions can also affect the terrain, with rain making paths slippery or boggy in places. The guides will help you navigate safely and adjust the pace to suit the group’s needs.
Participants meet at Horton in Ribblesdale at 6:15am to allow for an early start and maximise daylight hours. The goal is to complete the entire route within 12 hours, which means a steady pace with limited breaks.
The actual time to complete can vary depending on weather, group fitness, and conditions on the day. Your guide will help manage timing and ensure the group stays on track while considering safety and wellbeing.
The Yorkshire 3 Peaks route passes through a few small villages and farms where short breaks can be taken, but there are no dedicated cafés or shops along the way. Most participants bring packed lunches and snacks to eat on the move or during short stops.
The guides will plan stops strategically to balance rest with maintaining a good pace. Carrying enough water and energy-rich food is essential for sustaining energy throughout the long day.
Sturdy walking boots with good ankle support and grip are essential for navigating rocky and uneven paths safely. Waterproof clothing is highly recommended as weather in the Dales can change quickly, including waterproof jackets and trousers.
A daypack should carry extra layers, food, water (at least 2 litres), gloves, and a hat. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also important on sunny days. Detailed kit advice will be provided after booking to help you prepare appropriately.
Due to its length and physical demands, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge is best suited to walkers with prior experience of long-distance walking and some hill walking. Beginners may find it too strenuous without sufficient preparation.
If you’re new to hillwalking, it’s advisable to build up fitness and experience on shorter hikes before attempting this challenge. The guides can offer advice on training and preparation to help you get ready.
Guides monitor weather forecasts carefully in the days leading up to the event and on the morning of the challenge. If conditions are unsafe due to high winds, lightning, heavy rain, or poor visibility, the walk may be postponed or cancelled.
The priority is participant safety, so any decisions will be communicated promptly. In some cases, adjustments to the route or timing may be made to avoid the worst weather while still completing the challenge safely.
