Matera on screen is not the same as Matera on foot. The lanes that stood in for biblical Jerusalem, the chase lines from 007: No Time to Die, and the squares used in Imma Tataranni all sit in a rock-cut city that rewards anyone willing to look up from the pavement. A guided e-bike loop threads the Sassi, the Park of the Rupestrian Churches and the Murgia with a local guide who knows which corner was which scene, so you are riding through a living film set rather than hunting for a single famous doorway in a crowd.
You meet at Il Carrubo on Via S. Potito, collect an e-bike, and run through the controls before rolling into the historic streets. The guide leads a hidden itinerary of squares, ravine edges and lanes where international crews have filmed for decades, stopping where the story needs telling on foot because some of the Sassi is too tight or too steep to ride through with grace. You hear how The Passion of the Christ used this landscape, where Bond's chase threaded the rock, and which everyday corner doubled for a fictional southern town on television.
After the urban and rupestrian sections you ride out onto the Murgia for rugged scenery and the viewpoints used as Golgotha on screen, then finish at Murgia viewpoint with the Sassi laid out across the Gravina canyon in one sweeping panorama. The whole morning lasts about three and a half hours: long enough to connect the architecture to the films, without turning the day into a punishing climb on a hire bike with no motor.
Matera's Sassi are cave dwellings and lanes cut into limestone above the Gravina canyon, with the Murgia plateau opposite offering open grass and rock where crews have returned again and again. From a bike you link both sides faster than on foot, without missing the viewpoints that van tours sometimes rush past or that walkers never quite reach in one morning.
The start is in the historic centre at Il Carrubo, not a suburban industrial estate on the edge of town. Plan parking and ZTL rules before you arrive, because Matera's old centre was not designed for anyone who assumes they can drive to the front door of every meeting point.
You need to be comfortable on a bicycle and happy with some hills, even with motor assistance. Short off-road sections and dismounts are part of the filming-locations route, but your guide sets an easy pace and will adapt if you need extra stops along the way.
A local guide narrates the shoots as you ride, so you are not guessing which cave stood in for which scene or which alley appeared for three seconds in a trailer. Small groups keep the Sassi lanes civilised: enough people to feel like a proper outing, not so many that every stop turns into a convoy blocking the stone steps.
The e-bike makes the Murgia Timone viewpoint reachable in one morning without a bus tour or a thigh-burning climb on a conventional hire bike. You still earn the panorama, but the motor handles the steepest sections so you can save your attention for the story of how this landscape ended up on cinema screens around the world.
Meet at Il Carrubo on Via S. Potito. You are fitted to an e-bike, run through the power modes and cover safety before rolling into Matera's historic streets.
Enter the Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. The guide points out caves and lanes used as biblical Jerusalem and Bond chase scenery, with stops to admire the Gravina canyon.
Cycle through squares and buildings featured in Imma Tataranni, then leave the city for rugged Murgia tracks used in international productions. Dismount where the guide needs to tell a story on foot.
Reach the landscape used for Golgotha scenes, then pause at one of the Murgia viewpoints to look back at the Sassi across the Gravina. Return toward the city centre to hand back the bikes after about three and a half hours.
Meet at Il Carrubo, 19 Via S. Potito, 75100 Matera, near the historic centre. Do not navigate only to a random Murgia car park.
There is no hotel pickup. ZTL restrictions apply in parts of Matera, so check parking zones before you drive in. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for bike fit and a briefing.
You should already be comfortable riding a bicycle. The e-bike motor helps on Matera's hills and short off-road sections, but balance, braking and some dismounting still matter.
If you have never used an e-bike, the guide covers the controls at Il Carrubo before you enter the Sassi. Say when you meet if you are nervous on a bike and they will keep the group moving at a comfortable pace.
About three and a half hours from Via S. Potito 19, including bike fit, riding through the historic centre, the Sassi, the Park of the Rupestrian Churches and the Murgia Timone viewpoint.
Exact stops shift with group pace and which filming locations the guide highlights that day. It is a cultural ride with cinema stories, not a flat city hire.
Meet at Il Carrubo, 19 Via S. Potito, 75100 Matera, near the historic centre.
There is no hotel pickup. Public transport is noted as nearby, but parking in Matera needs planning. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for bike adjustment and a safety brief.
The route threads locations used in 007: No Time to Die, The Passion of the Christ and the Imma Tataranni TV series. Your guide points out chase lines, biblical sets and squares that stood in for fictional towns.
You dismount where required for tighter Sassi lanes or to hear a story on foot. The guide knows which corners are rideable on the day.
Groups are capped at eight guests plus your guide. That keeps the Sassi lanes and Murgia tracks workable without a convoy of bikes.
Solo riders, couples and small friend groups are welcome. English and Italian guided departures may both appear in the widget on different dates.
Wear closed shoes you can pedal in, sun protection and a light layer. The Murgia is exposed and the Sassi lanes are stone underfoot even on a bike.
Bring water. You will dismount in places, so comfortable walking shoes matter as much as pedalling shoes.
The ride mixes urban streets, cycle paths and short off-road sections on the Murgia. The e-bike motor is what makes the hills manageable, but it is still a varied route rather than a flat promenade.
Some viewpoints need a short walk from the bikes, and your guide keeps the pace comfortable on the stone lanes and open Murgia tracks.
Open rock and exposed Murgia ridges are affected by wind and rain. Heavy downpours or thunderstorms can make stone lanes slippery, in which case the team may postpone.
Light cloud is often fine for photography. If the forecast looks doubtful, the crew will be in touch rather than leaving you guessing.
Yes. A local guide leads the ride and narrates the filming locations. E-bikes are supplied for the full outing.
You are not sent out with a map of movie posters. The guide connects the rock-cut architecture to the scenes shot here.
The ride ends at the Murgia Timone viewpoint across the Gravina canyon, looking back at the Sassi from the opposite rim. It is the panoramic payoff after the filming-locations loop.
Time at the viewpoint is for photos and the story of how the landscape was used on screen, not a long picnic. You then return toward the city centre.
