Ride well-trained horses through rolling hills, forest edges and quiet village paths around Gjinofshat, a rural corner of southern Albania within easy reach of Gjirokaster. Local instructors keep the pace gentle for beginners, families and anyone who wants a calm hour in the countryside without a long drive from the coast. It is a lovely way to see rural life from saddle height rather than through a car window, with wide views and village lanes that still move at a slower pace.
After meeting your guide and horse at the riding base in Asim Zeneli, you receive a short introduction to handling and safety before mounting up in the yard. Instructors check footwear and clothing, help you settle on your horse and explain how to hold the reins and communicate with your mount before leaving the stables.
The route follows countryside tracks through farmland, wooded slopes and traditional village lanes where olive groves and stone homes line the path. Your guide sets a relaxed walking pace suited to the group, with pauses for photos and questions about local agriculture and rural customs as you climb gently towards open ridges.
Rest stops on higher slopes let you look across rolling hills and distant ridges, adjust stirrups and drink water before completing the loop back to the riding base. The ride typically lasts between one and a half and two hours including briefing and mounting, then you dismount with assistance and thank your horse before heading back to Gjirokaster or the coast.
Gjinofshat sits in the hills south of Gjirokaster, where stone villages, olive groves and open ridges give riders wide views without venturing deep into remote mountains. The area feels authentic and largely untouched by mass tourism, which makes a short horseback outing a memorable contrast to castle streets in the UNESCO city nearby.
Asim Zeneli village is a practical meeting point with established riding facilities, so you can combine this experience with buggy rides or other southern Albania activities during a stay on the Ionian coast or in Gjirokaster itself. Countryside trails here stay gentle rather than technical, which suits first-time riders and relaxed holiday pacing.
No previous riding experience is required because instructors brief you before you mount and lead the group throughout the session on village paths and open slopes. You should be comfortable sitting on a horse for around ninety minutes and follow basic safety instructions regarding clothing and behaviour around the animals.
Minimum age is fourteen years and long trousers, closed shoes with a small heel and sensible layers are important on the trail. Jewellery, backpacks and loose scarves are not permitted while riding for safety reasons, and a small secured waist bag for phone and keys is fine if worn tightly.
Small groups of two to ten riders allow instructors to watch each guest closely and adjust the pace to confidence levels on narrow village lanes. Horses are accustomed to beginners, which helps first-time riders feel supported rather than rushed on the trails through farmland and forest edges.
It is a straightforward way to see rural Albania from a different angle when you are already visiting Gjirokaster or the southern coast, with clear meeting instructions and a focused session that fits into a half-day itinerary. The gentle walking pace and experienced handlers make this a welcoming introduction to riding rather than a demanding trek.
Arrive at Caravan Horse Riding Albania for registration, a safety briefing and introduction to your horse. Instructors check footwear and clothing before helping you mount in the yard.
Follow your guide along quiet lanes through Gjinofshat countryside, passing farmland, forest edges and traditional homes. The pace stays at a comfortable walk with pauses for photos and local stories.
Climb gently to open slopes where you can look across rolling hills and distant ridges. Rest stops let you adjust stirrups, drink water and enjoy the rural setting before continuing the loop.
Complete the circuit back to the riding base, dismount with assistance and thank your horse. The full experience including briefing usually lasts between one and a half and two hours door to door.
The riding session is planned for roughly ninety minutes on the trails, though the full visit including briefing and mounting can stretch to about two hours in total. Pace is kept gentle so beginners and families can enjoy the countryside without pressure.
Your instructor may shorten or extend rest stops depending on weather and how the group is coping on horseback.
No prior experience is necessary. Instructors explain how to mount, hold the reins and communicate with your horse before you leave the yard, and they stay with the group throughout the ride.
If you have ridden before, mention it at the start so the guide can match you with a suitable horse and pace.
Participants must be at least fourteen years old to join this ride. The route and session length are designed for older teenagers and adults who can follow safety rules around horses.
Younger family members are welcome on other experiences we offer, but this particular countryside loop is kept to the stated age limit.
Wear long trousers such as denim, closed shoes with a heel up to about two centimetres, and a plain cotton shirt or t-shirt. Sun cream and a hat are useful on open sections of the trail.
Jewellery, shorts, sandals, backpacks and loose scarves are not allowed while riding. A small waist bag for phone and keys is fine if secured tightly.
All riders meet at Caravan Horse Riding Albania in Asim Zeneli village, postcode 6017, a short drive from Gjirokaster. We'll send full directions after you book.
Arrive a few minutes early so the briefing and horse allocation can begin on time.
Rides run with a minimum of two guests and up to ten riders in the same session. Small numbers help the instructor monitor safety and keep the convoy organised on village paths.
If you are travelling solo, get in touch through Adventuro Chat to see whether another party is already scheduled for your preferred date.
Transport to and from Asim Zeneli is not included in the ride price. Most guests drive, take a taxi or arrange a transfer from Gjirokaster or coastal bases such as Saranda.
Plan journey time accordingly so you are not late for the mounted session.
Heavy rain, storms or conditions that make trails slippery may lead to postponement for rider and horse welfare. Light cloud or cool temperatures are often fine and can make riding more comfortable.
We'll contact you if a change is needed and try to offer another date when possible.
A phone or small camera in a secure waist bag is acceptable for photos during rest stops. Large cameras, neck-mounted rigs and backpacks are not permitted while mounted because they can distract horses or unbalance riders.
Ask your guide when it is safe to take photos so you do not startle the animals on narrow paths.
