Arkhangai is classic riding country west of the capital, with wide valleys, volcanic knobs and the upper Orkhon River. Tsetserleg is the aimag capital, a small town with a museum and market, while Tsenkher hot springs draw visitors for an soak between saddle days. Many central loops dip north from Kharkhorin into Arkhangai before returning to Ulaanbaatar.
Tsetserleg has a pleasant museum in an old monastery building and a market for fruit and bread between riding days. River fords on valley tracks rise after storms, so flexible itineraries help. Tsenkher pools are busy at weekends with domestic visitors.
Volcanic knobs rise above the Orkhon floodplain, and herders graze horses on slopes that turn gold in September. Camp nights are cool even in July, so a warm layer for evenings is worth packing.
Long riding loops cross shallow fords where horses splash knee-deep, and guides choose safer crossings after heavy rain. Ger camps along the Orkhon serve fried bread for breakfast before saddles are cinched.
Valley rides and hot springs
